About The Position

Performs venipuncture and capillary specimen collection on patients. Depending on work location, the position may perform in-house phlebotomy and specimen processing, phlebotomy in a physician office setting, or registration and phlebotomy in a patient service center. Communicates effectively with laboratory colleagues, clients, physicians, medical office staff, and patients. The position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between EvergreenHealth and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Healthcare 1199NW.

Requirements

High school graduation or equivalent, or applicable coursework toward obtaining required Washington State Medical Assistant–Phlebotomy (MA-P) certification.
Medical terminology knowledge.
Washington State Medical Assistant–Phlebotomist (MA-P) certification or equivalent.

Nice To Haves

Certification from an approved phlebotomy training program with successful completion of a required internship, or relevant work experience.
Three years of experience in clinical laboratory customer service or specimen processing.
Previous training and competence in handling the range of customer service situations involving clinicians and their office staff.
Working knowledge of government regulations, particularly Medicare and Washington State Medical Test Site regulations.
Working knowledge of College of American Pathologists (ASCP) and The Joint Commission (TJC) inspection criteria.
PBT(ASCP).

Responsibilities

Collect venous and capillary blood samples from patients of all age groups and accurately identify and label specimens according to laboratory protocol.
Use the laboratory information system or reference laboratories’ web-based applications to independently resolve complex issues in a sensitive, caring, and timely manner.
Process specimens according to laboratory protocol, including proper handling, centrifugation, storage, packaging, and transport.
Collect insurance and financial information necessary for proper billing.
Apply knowledge of requirements for collecting ABNs and completing MSPQ information.
Accurately enter orders and patient demographic information into the laboratory information system.
Answer and navigate calls accurately, efficiently, and courteously using effective customer service practices.
Perform other duties as assigned.
