About The Position

The University of Virginia Department of Pediatrics and Division of Neonatology seek a faculty member at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. The appointment may be tenure-eligible on the Clinical Educator Track or tenure-ineligible on the Clinical Faculty Track. The ideal candidate is a board-certified or board-eligible neonatologist with strong clinical skills and a career focus in education, quality improvement, or other academic pursuits. Special consideration is given to candidates with expertise in neonatal hemodynamics and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). The UVA NICU is a 64-bed Level IV unit with approximately 950 admissions annually and plans to expand to more than 90 beds by 2028. About 30% of admissions are born at outside hospitals across Virginia and the mid-Atlantic region, and many infants have complex multisystem conditions. The NICU cares for preoperative cardiac patients and provides ECMO. The division includes 16 neonatologists and a PhD with academic interests spanning bench and clinical research, quality improvement, and education. Its Neonatology Fellowship has nine fellows, alongside a large and growing group of advanced practice providers, residents, and medical and APP students. The division operates a telehealth program that complements the Neonatal Emergency Transport System, providing consultations and transports for sick infants, and has an active NICU follow-up program run by Developmental Pediatrics. Division members collaborate with other Pediatrics divisions, all subspecialties, and obstetric and Maternal-Fetal Medicine colleagues. UVA has approximately 2,500 deliveries annually, many high risk, as well as a busy Fetal Care Center and an MFM fellowship program. UVA Health Children’s is part of UVA Health Medical Center, an academic medical center and health system. UVA Health Children’s has been rated Virginia’s number one children’s hospital for six consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report; in 2026, nine pediatrics subspecialties were ranked, including Neonatology at number 41. UVA Health’s network includes four hospitals, two physician groups, and primary and specialty care clinics across Charlottesville, Albemarle, Nelson and Augusta counties, Culpeper, and Northern Virginia.
