About The Position

This is an open-rank, clinical faculty appointment within the Department of Infectious Diseases. The role involves a significant clinical practice (80%), administrative duties (10%), research (5%), and education (5%). The position requires exemplary clinical practice, leadership skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with various staff levels. The faculty member will develop and maintain a clinical practice, complete patient documentation, correspond with physicians, and share clinical responsibilities. They will also represent the department in local, regional, and national matters, participate in research initiatives, and provide educational programs for fellows, advanced practitioners, and residents.

Requirements

  • Must provide complete and thorough history and physical patient examinations.
  • Must be able to perform invasive procedures as dictated by the physician's subspecialty.
  • Must be capable of sharing clinical responsibilities with other faculty, including but not limited to inpatient service, outpatient clinic and outpatient procedures, and other duties as requested.
  • Requires the ability to satisfy and maintain all requirements necessary to ensure the continued security and integrity of critical infrastructure.
  • Requires the attributes of a servant leader with emotional intelligence to develop and manage a research team effectively.
  • May necessitate instructing (through written or verbal communication) research support personnel in protocol implementation.
  • May require the completion of grant application forms through oral dictation or a computer and keyboard.
  • Requires the ability to synthesize a myriad of information pertaining to the area of research.
  • Requires verbal interaction with colleagues and walking to meeting locations throughout the campus.

  • Keep abreast of current approaches in the management of patients through attendance at continuing education conferences in the specialty. This will require listening to and assimilating information from conferences.
  • Represent the Department of Infectious Diseases in local, regional, state, and national matters pertaining to infectious diseases. Will require traveling to sites outside of the Houston area and, upon return, disseminating the information obtained or learned by sharing with Department colleagues verbally or in writing.
  • Serve on institutional and hospital committees as requested by the Chair. Visually review all documents pertaining to committee functions.
  • Represent the Department by participating or presenting at local, regional, state, and national meetings in the field of medical oncology.
  • Provide the medical leadership to develop programs of clinical research and scholarly activities in keeping within the goals of the Department focused on infectious diseases in patients with cancer.
  • Identify grants and funding sources for research funding, submit grants and protocols in accordance with rules and deadline applications, develop budgets and analyses, and complete grant and protocol application forms.
  • Assist with coordinating research activity within the Department to avoid duplication of efforts. Develop partnerships within and outside the Infectious Diseases programs to support multicenter clinical research efforts and trials.
  • Seek appropriate funding mechanisms, mainly peer-reviewed grant applications, to support clinical research initiatives. Require budget development and planning to ensure adequate support of clinical trials. Provide direction for and share relevant databases with investigators to augment new research projects and provide baseline data to support grant submissions.
  • Ensure quality, timely, and coordinated clinical study activities that meet the standards of the institutional and other health and regulatory authority guidelines within areas of the responsibility for this position.
  • Provide a balanced and integrated educational program for medical fellows, Advanced Practitioners, and residents who rotate through the Department of Infectious Diseases.
  • Attend and participate in Division/Department teaching and continuing education conferences which require verbal interaction with colleagues and walking to meeting locations throughout the campus.

Responsibilities

  • Practice clinical medicine in an exemplary manner, adhering to standards set by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and the American College of Physicians.
  • Demonstrate highly developed leadership skills, including communication, organization, and effective collaboration with professional, technical, and administrative staff.

  • Perform invasive procedures as dictated by the physician's subspecialty, which may require standing, bending, stooping, lifting, hearing, manual dexterity, and clear verbal communication.
  • Develop and maintain a clinical practice for patients referred to UT MD Anderson.
  • Visually review and approve all charge documents within 5 working days for proper ICD-10 and CPT coding.
  • Complete patient documentation for medical records within time frames provided by institutional policy, dictating in a clear and concise manner and visually reviewing documents.
  • Correspond appropriately in writing or via telephone with physicians regarding patient care and treatment.
  • Request appropriate consultations for patients by phone or in writing to other physicians.
  • Share clinical responsibilities with other faculty, including inpatient service, outpatient clinic, outpatient procedures, and other requested duties.
  • Stay informed about current approaches in patient management through attendance at continuing education conferences, requiring listening to and assimilating information.
  • Represent the Department of Infectious Diseases in local, regional, state, and national matters pertaining to infectious diseases, which may involve travel and disseminating information.
  • Participate in investigating and reviewing best practice initiatives and clinical and institutional effectiveness projects.
  • Serve on institutional and hospital committees as requested by the Chair, visually reviewing all related documents.
  • Represent the Department by participating or presenting at local, regional, state, and national meetings in the field of medical oncology.
  • Actively engage in basic and clinical research, providing medical leadership to develop programs of clinical research and scholarly activities focused on infectious diseases in cancer patients.
  • Identify grants and funding sources, submit grants and protocols, develop budgets and analyses, and complete grant and protocol application forms.
  • Assist with coordinating research activity within the Department to avoid duplication of efforts and develop partnerships to support multicenter clinical research efforts and trials.
