This role specifically seeks a genetic counsellor to support the molecular laboratory in screening and diagnostic reporting workflows within Newborn Screening Ontario (NSO). The Clinical Content Specialist is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the implementation of clinical and/or technical programs and processes, developing communication and change management strategies for new provincial clinical care systems, and acting as a liaison between clinical and technical experts and the broader community of practice. They ensure stakeholder engagement, buy-in, and conflict resolution, while also interpreting genomic variants, providing consultation on molecular diagnostic and newborn screening results, and ensuring prompt response to positive or equivocal results. The role involves chart documentation, database updates, consultation letters, and providing ongoing support and education to patients and families. Collaboration with internal and external healthcare providers is crucial for continuity of care. The specialist also ensures that system enhancements meet user needs and addresses any usability concerns. They develop communication frameworks and educational plans for change management, identify and mitigate project risks, and deliver presentations on new systems and technology. Knowledge translation, priority setting with medical/scientific staff, and participation in guideline development are also key aspects of the role. Quality assurance practices are maintained to improve data quality and support stakeholders with timely, reliable data.

Requirements

  • Criminal Record Check (PRC) (Essential)
  • Professional Clinical designation in Genetic Counselling or 10 years of related experience (Essential)
  • Comprehensively use computer technology and equipment; proficiency in MS Office suite (Essential)

  • Experience and knowledge of health systems, and healthcare delivery in Ontario. (Essential)

Responsibilities

  • Acts as clinical champion by advocating for improved health outcomes by coordinating and communicating clinical and/or technical system implementation plans to stakeholders to increase adoption, support high quality data and drive timely decision making
  • Uses their understanding of clinician and patient experience to inform the implementation of new clinical systems and/or technology
  • Interpretation of genomic variants detected through molecular screening and diagnostics at NSO
  • Provide consultation services to clients and health care providers regarding molecular diagnostic and newborn screening results
  • Ensure prompt and appropriate response to positive and/or equivocal newborn screening or diagnostic results
  • Serve as a resource and provide education about newborn screening and molecular diagnostics
  • Complete chart documentation, database updates and consultation letters to patients and referring MDs to summarize next steps and recommendations.
  • Provide necessary ongoing support and education to patients and families; identify current sources of educational materials, support groups and other community linkages.
  • Liaise with colleagues, internal and external health care providers and other groups to ensure continuity of care through counselling, testing, results and follow-up.
  • Ensure enhancements meet the needs of the user community and report concerns or issues where the solution is not user friendly, reduces workload, relevant to the needs and a risk to adoption.
  • Develops a communication framework and comprehensive educational plan to assist with change management of stakeholders
  • Identifies and addresses project risks associated with information access, workflows, timeliness and quality and develops mitigation strategies with the support of management.
  • Delivers presentations and demonstrations at stakeholder sites related to new clinical systems and/or technology: presented to front-line staff, management and executive Leadership
  • Manages the process of knowledge translation related to new clinical systems and/or technology and front line/management staff
  • Works with the medical / scientific staff and/or program management to set priorities and deliverables, identify dependencies and resource requirements, evaluate performance, monitor specific results and identify ways to eliminate causes of unsatisfactory performance
  • Uses multiple methods of engagement to provide education, training and communications to participating organizations and stakeholders.
  • Assists in development and implementation of guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols
  • Participates in additional clinical, administrative, and research activities as required
  • Participates in ongoing development.
  • Maintains and monitors quality assurance practices to continuously improve the quality of data.
  • Provides support to hospitals, midwifery practices and other stakeholders to ensure timely, reliable, valid and usable data.
