The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 10-bed state-of-the-art critical care unit providing comprehensive services for critically ill medical and surgical pediatric patients aged 18 and under. The unit offers specialized care for conditions including congenital heart disease, cardiovascular surgery, respiratory failure, neurosurgery, immunodeficiencies, hematologic and oncologic emergencies, sepsis, and multi-organ system dysfunction. Advanced treatment modalities include ECMO, high-frequency ventilation, nitric oxide therapy, non-invasive ventilation, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. CHEO provides a 20-week orientation and support period for new nurses. The nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for individual patients/families, practicing according to standards, and promoting wellness through patient and family education.
