About The Position

CHEO is a global leader in pediatric health, transforming from a 20th-century acute care hospital into a 21st-century integrated child and youth health system. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 10-bed state-of-the-art critical care unit providing comprehensive services for critically ill medical and surgical pediatric patients aged 18 and under. The unit offers specialized care for conditions including congenital heart disease, cardiovascular surgery, respiratory failure, neurosurgery, immunodeficiencies, hematologic and oncologic emergencies, sepsis, and multi-organ system dysfunction. Advanced treatment modalities include ECMO, high-frequency ventilation, nitric oxide therapy, non-invasive ventilation, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. CHEO provides a 20-week orientation and support period for new nurses. The nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for individual patients/families, practicing according to standards, and promoting wellness through patient and family education.

Requirements

  • Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Current Certification of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Current CPR Certification
  • Pediatric acute care experience (minimum 2 years) OR critical care experience (minimum 2 years)
  • Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated culturally sensitive approach to nursing care
  • Demonstrated strong family centered care skills
  • Current PALS certification OR successful completion of PALS certification within 12 months of hire

Nice To Haves

  • Critical Care experience with the ability to care for Hemodynamically unstable and ventilated patients
  • Bilingual (English/ French)
  • Baccalaureate Degree of Nursing
  • Critical Care courses and Certification or other appropriate combination of education and experience

  • Assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care for individual patients/families.
  • Effectively uses the nursing process.
  • Practices according to the standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario, the Hospital, and the patient service unit.
  • Provides appropriate learning experiences for the patient and family to promote or maintain wellness, and to achieve an optimal quality of life.
  • Is accountable for maintaining competence while developing the quality of his/ her professional nursing practice.
