About The Position

The Clinical Assistant provides care to individuals across various age groups in a rural ambulatory care setting. This position plays a vital role in ensuring efficient clinic operations and enhancing patient flow, thereby maximizing the provider’s time and ensuring access to care. Clinical Assistants manage administrative duties, data management, and perform basic clinical tasks, utilizing more complex skills compared to entry-level roles. Responsibilities include patient charting, medical history documentation, and direct support to healthcare providers.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED – required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification – required.
  • Completion of clinical competency within 3 months of hire and every 3 years – required.
  • Completion of a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant program, or One year of experience as a Clinical Assistant 1 with successful completion of competency assessment, or One year of experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, or Community Health Aide.
  • Understanding of clinic procedures and patient visit protocols.
  • Familiarity with age-appropriate vital signs and patient behavior.
  • Basic patient triage skills.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Effective communication and customer service abilities.
  • Proficiency in computer applications for managing medical databases.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to Utilize various EMR systems to accurately record patient information.
  • Communicate effectively with a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties consistent with the entry-level Clinical Assistant role while applying advanced knowledge of medical practice and terminology.
  • Prepare for patient visits by reviewing charts for necessary documentation and follow-up procedures.
  • Obtain and accurately record age-appropriate vital signs per department protocol.
  • Update medical histories and confirm medication information.
  • Maintain organized and accurate patient records, including compiling relevant medical data as needed.
  • Ensure medication and immunization records are current.
  • Recognize signs of medical concern and act promptly with appropriate interventions.
  • Transport patients within the facility when necessary.
  • Manage patient care tasks efficiently while maintaining smooth clinic operations.
  • Document and report any changes in patient condition, safety incidents, or other significant observations.
  • Set up equipment and supplies for routine examinations and minor procedures.
  • Assist in preparing patients for procedures, treatments, and minor surgeries.
  • Conduct specimen collection and point-of-care testing per established protocols.
  • Provide basic patient education and post-appointment instructions as directed by the provider.
  • Sanitize examination rooms and process surgical equipment according to safety standards.
  • Maintain and organize exam room supplies and laboratory equipment.
  • Dispose of waste and infectious materials following infection control guidelines.
  • Engage in basic health coaching and follow evidence-based guidelines for patient education.
  • Conduct routine quality assurance checks on equipment and maintain necessary logs.
  • Utilize computer-based health information systems and electronic health records efficiently.
  • Respond to general inquiries from staff, patients, and visitors in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Provide mutual support and cross-coverage for colleagues as needed.
  • Participate in at least 50% of annual staff meetings and apply information shared during these sessions.
  • Collaborate in unit goal setting and adhere to departmental scheduling guidelines.
  • Address unresolved patient or employee issues according to established policies.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
