About The Position

Responsible for assisting with the daily operation of the City Jail to ensure the welfare, safety, and security of inmates and staff. This role involves processing inmates, maintaining their well-being, communicating with external agencies, and performing administrative tasks. The position requires adherence to strict legal and procedural guidelines, and the ability to handle stressful and potentially hostile situations with professionalism.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have or obtain a valid Municipal Jailer certification from Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEXS) within one (1) year of employment.
  • Must have or obtain a valid certification from Texas Crime Information Center (TCIC) within 90 days of employment.
  • Must have or obtain a valid certification from National Crime Information Center (NCIC) within 90 days of employment.
  • Must have or obtain Red Cross or American Heart Association Adult CPR, AED & First Aid Certification within 90 days of employment or completed at the next City of Denton offered course (online training is not valid).
  • Must have or obtain a Food Handlers certification recognized by Texas Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) within 30 days of employment.
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local Government laws, ordinances, codes, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of filing and record retention practices.
  • Skill in analyzing and researching, to interpret and understand policies, laws, and regulations, and to provide workable recommendations and solutions that maintain compliance.
  • Skill in problem solving; identifying problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Skill at the beginner level, working with applicable Microsoft Office 365 products, and other software systems to complete work.

  • Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, employment history verification, and social security number verification.
  • Must pass a physical examination.
  • Must pass a polygraph examination.
  • Must pass a psychological examination.
  • Must meet civilian hiring standards of the Denton Police Department and complete a Personal History Statement.
  • Must have no Class A and/or felony convictions.
  • Must have no Class B misdemeanor convictions or higher within the last ten (10) years.
  • Must not be on probation for any criminal offense above Class C misdemeanor.
  • Must have no family violence convictions.
  • Must have no Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) within the last ten (10) years.
  • Must not be on suspension for refusing a breathalyzer test.
  • Must not be prohibited by state or federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition.
  • Must not be prohibited by state or federal law from operating a motor vehicle within the past 24 months.
  • Must not be currently under indictment for any criminal offense.
  • Must have no convictions for crimes involving moral turpitude.

Responsibilities

  • Process all incoming and outgoing jail inmates including taking photographs and fingerprints, documenting markings and tattoos, completing appropriate computerized forms (arrest, biographical data, medical history, criminal charges, PREA compliance), conducting searches for contraband, entering and removing inmate property, and entering information into the applicable database.
  • Perform and document activities to ensure welfare, safety, and security of inmates and stakeholders, including controlling jail entry/exit, monitoring visitors, securing visitors and inmates during visits, supervising inmates during booking, holding, jail cell, visits, and restraint chair use, conducting routine inmate checks, monitoring jail camera system, preparing and distributing meals, administering prescribed medication, issuing clothing, shoes, blankets, and personal hygiene items, and performing cleanup and laundry tasks.
  • Communicate with mental health agencies to facilitate and request inmate evaluations.
  • Provide CPR/first aid and summon medical attention as needed, and notify leadership immediately of welfare, safety, and/or security issues.
  • Conduct tasks including conducting TCIC/NCIC criminal histories, providing officers with warrant information, preparing arraignment and municipal court documents, assisting municipal judges, escorting inmates to and from arraignment proceedings, scanning e-file jail paperwork for the district attorney, providing testimony during court proceedings, preparing DCSO jail booking documents, and facilitating jail transfers of Class B and higher inmate offenders.
  • Conduct administrative tasks including answering telephones, handling inquiries, submitting facility maintenance requests, completing bond forms (P/R, cash, surety), witnessing surety bonds, accepting and processing bond payments, sending teletypes to external agencies, confirming 24-hour inmate pickups, reconciling incoming cash bonds, ensuring the integrity of incoming cash funds, and fingerprinting members of the general public.
  • Ensure equipment is in safe operating condition; perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment, as appropriate and/or notify leadership immediately of needed repairs.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing; operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Promptly report unsafe conditions in the work area and/or any conditions that are not immediately correctable to leadership.
