Chief Nursing Officer- Milton Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Milton: Founded as Milton Hospital in 1903 and located in Milton, Mass., Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital‑Milton is a 100‑bed regional community hospital nationally recognized for quality of care and patient safety. The hospital offers inpatient medical/surgical care, diagnostic imaging, and a wide range of outpatient programs serving communities south of Boston. Position Summary: Reporting to the Hospital President, the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is responsible for overseeing the strategy, operations, and systems that ensure the delivery of patient-centered nursing care at the highest quality. A key aspect of this role is advancing nursing practice through continuous professional development, innovation in nursing care, and a commitment to operational excellence. The CNO provides executive leadership in all areas related to nursing leadership, clinical practice, quality improvement, and cost management/revenue optimization, ensuring that nursing initiatives align with and support the hospital's strategic and operational goals.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Nursing and Business Administration, Healthcare Finance or Hospital Administration required.
  • Massachusetts Nursing License Required
  • Ten years progressively more responsible executive/director level leadership experience in patient care in an acute care setting.
  • Advanced knowledge of professional nursing practice in an executive or specialty practice area as evidenced through certification (e.g. CENP, NEA-BC, FACHE, etc.) preferred.
  • Epic experience a strong plus and/or a thorough understanding of the Electronic Medical Record system, concepts of clinical informatics, and other advanced health care technologies.
  • A thorough understanding of the health care environment and all applicable laws and regulations.
  • In depth knowledge of system thinking, change leadership, shared governance, matrix reporting, continuous improvement, process improvement, critical thinking, and financial and productivity management.
  • Ability to make decisions with significant, broad implications for the management and operations of a major department or multiple departments.
  • Participates in decisions on overall strategy and direction of the organization.
  • Ability to address problems that are broad, complex and abstract, often involving Medical Center-wide issues and requiring substantial creativity, resourcefulness, staff engagement, Lean diagnostic techniques, negotiation and diplomacy to develop solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Directly responsible for nursing practice throughout all areas/service lines at BID-Milton including the emergency services, inpatient nursing services, nutritional services, professional nursing practice, community wellness and community benefits/relations.
  • Responsible for the effective selection, development and performance management of staff, both directly and through the Nursing Directors and Managers to ensure the right talent is in place to achieve staff experience, clinical, patient experience, quality and financial goals.
  • Directs a team of Directors and Managers in the delivery of systems and programs designed to promote the efficient and effective delivery of nursing care.
  • Serves as a mentor and a resource to both the Nursing Directors and Nurse Managers who participate on the various service line teams.
  • May have direct operational responsibility for one or more nursing areas.
  • Develops and sustains relationships that are built on a high degree of trust, effective communication, collaboration, and mutual respect with all staff, physicians, Board Members, Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) colleagues and community members.
  • Continues and strengthens a proven history of high employee engagement through visible leadership, accountability, and meaningful workforce connection.
  • Lead conflict resolution strategies between staff, departments, and leadership to maintain a productive and respectful work environment.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to nursing leaders in managing interpersonal or labor-related conflicts.
  • Ensures that development and continuous evaluation of strategies and systems are designed to promote nursing care of the highest safety and quality, and patient care is grounded in evidence-based practice and that is focused on the needs of patients and their families.
  • Provide leadership and guidance in conceptualizing and implementing a philosophy of nursing, which advances the discipline of nursing, facilitates the design/redesign of patient care delivery, builds relationships among constituents both within and outside the nursing division, and promotes education, information sharing, and professional development.
  • Collaborates with the Sr. Leadership Team, direct reports and others in the development and implementation of operating and capital budgets.
  • Develops and implements ongoing measures/evaluation methods related to all dimensions of performance inclusive of budget and productivity targets.
  • In partnership with Human Resources, ensures the recruitment, retention, development, succession planning for and engagement of patient care team members and leadership.
  • Plays and active leadership role in developing, implementing and monitoring goals that address ethnic and racial disparities, promote an inclusive patient care and workplace environment and ensure the nursing staff team represents the diverse backgrounds of the community that it serves at all levels.
  • Participates in development, education and implementation of technology solutions that supports both clinical and administrative operations, including but not limited to EPIC, Workday, productivity applications.
  • Forges and maintains relationships with BILH, and identifies opportunities to expand services, create efficiencies, and further advance the relationship.
  • Performs assessments to determine areas for improvement and better collaboration.
  • Partners with the CMO to enhance the care delivery model with a focus on care coordination, patient flow, length of stay, readmission rates, access to care, eliminating harm, capacity management, and quality and efficiency of care.
  • Implements rapid implementation of best practices understanding what is needed for adaptation by providers and sites of care.
  • Sustains and enhances the shared governance model for nursing to include implementation of a nursing organizational infrastructure that supports this model.
  • Provide leadership for continuous improvement in clinical quality and patient safety, including implementing National Patient Safety Standards and staying informed on trends in quality improvement.
  • Clinical best practices are regularly integrated into care delivery.
  • Ensures the ongoing compliance with all relevant regulatory bodies, including The Joint Commission, CMS, and the Department of Public Health.
  • Directs the delivery of systems and programs designed to promote the efficient and effective delivery of nursing care.
  • Serve as a mentor and a resource to both the Associate Chiefs and to the nurse managers who participate on the various service line teams.
  • Serves at the executive level in the hospital and assumes an active leadership role with the hospital's governing body, senior leadership, medical staff, management and other clinical leaders in the hospital's decision-making structure.
