About The Position

The Checker operates the cash register, assists customers throughout the store, and helps ensure each customer has a positive experience. This fast-paced retail role involves providing friendly service, accurately processing transactions, supporting store operations, and maintaining a clean and safe register area. Hy-Vee provides all required training; no education or prior experience is required. Employment is contingent upon successfully completing a pre-employment drug screen.

Requirements

Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and complete tasks involving a few concrete variables.
Perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions.
Communicate supply needs orally or in writing.
Work effectively as part of a team to deliver a positive customer experience.
No education or experience requirements; training is provided.
Frequently stand and walk throughout the shift; perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending.

Responsibilities

Provide prompt, friendly customer service and help make each visit positive.
Operate the cash register accurately and process cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, in-store charges, and lottery transactions.
Count back change, issue receipts, and provide refunds or credit memorandums for returned merchandise as needed.
Follow local, state, and federal requirements for WIC, food stamps, and sales of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets.
Bag or box merchandise, assist courtesy personnel, and support drive-up and carry-out service.
Stay informed about item lookup and department numbers, product features, weekly ad price changes, and sale items.
Stock, face, and rotate merchandise; clean shelves; understand shelf tags; and escort customers to items when requested.
Keep the register area clean, maintain adequate supplies, and report improper cash levels in the drawer.
Verify register balances at the beginning and end of shifts where applicable.
Communicate clearly over the intercom or telephone, answer customer questions, and follow up with appropriate personnel as needed.
Remain aware of surroundings to support store safety and security.
Assist store management with displays and decorations for promotions and events as needed.
Assist in other store areas and take on special projects as assigned.
Follow personal hygiene and dress standards, Hy-Vee policies, and store guidelines.
Report to work as scheduled and on time.
