About The Position

Hy-Vee is seeking a customer-focused Checker to help customers and support store operations. Checkers operate the register, assist customers throughout the store, and help ensure each visit ends positively. The role is based in a fast-paced retail store environment and involves being on your feet throughout the shift. Training is provided, and there are no education or experience requirements. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.

Requirements

Ability to follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks with a few concrete variables.
Ability to perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Ability to understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions and communicate supply needs orally or in writing.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team to deliver a great customer experience.
Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift; perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, point-of-sale transactions, and cleaning or sanitation duties.
Complete a pre-employment drug screen.

Responsibilities

Provide prompt, friendly customer service, greet customers, learn their names, and help make each visit a positive experience.
Operate the cash register accurately and process cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, in-store charges, and lottery transactions.
Count back change, issue receipts, and provide cash refunds or credit memorandums for returned merchandise as needed.
Follow applicable local, state, and federal guidelines for WIC, food stamps, and sales of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets.
Bag or box merchandise, assist courtesy personnel, and support drive-up and carry-out service.
Stay knowledgeable about item lookup and department numbers, product features, weekly ad price changes, and sale items.
Stock, face, and rotate merchandise; clean shelves; understand shelf tags; and help customers locate items.
Keep the register area clean, maintain adequate supplies, and report improper cash levels in the drawer.
Verify register balances at the beginning and end of shifts where applicable.
Communicate clearly on the intercom or telephone, answer customer questions, and follow up with appropriate personnel as needed.
Remain aware of surroundings to support store safety and security.
Assist store management with displays and decorations for promotions and events as needed.
Assist in other store areas and take on special projects as assigned.
Maintain personal hygiene and dress standards and follow Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines.
Report to work as scheduled and on time.
