About The Position

The Checker operates a register, assists customers throughout the store, and helps ensure customers have a positive final interaction before leaving. The role includes providing friendly service, accurately processing transactions and returns, supporting store operations and safety, and maintaining the register and surrounding area. Training is provided; no education or experience is required. Applicants must be at least 18 years old. Employment is contingent upon successfully completing a pre-employment drug screen.

Requirements

Must be at least 18 years old.

Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks involving a few concrete variables.
Perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions and communicate supply needs orally or in writing.
Work effectively as part of a team to deliver a great customer experience.
Complete a pre-employment drug screen successfully.
Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift; perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending.

Responsibilities

Greet customers and provide prompt, friendly service, learning customers' names and helping make each visit positive.
Operate the cash register and process payments, including cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, in-store charges, and lottery transactions.
Count back change, issue receipts, and provide cash refunds or credit memorandums for returned merchandise as needed.
Follow applicable local, state, and federal guidelines for WIC, food stamps, and sales of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets.
Bag or box merchandise, assist courtesy personnel, and support drive-up and carry-out service.
Stay informed about item and department numbers, item features, weekly ad price changes, and sale items.
Stock, face, and rotate merchandise; clean shelves; understand shelf tags; and help customers locate items.
Keep the register area clean and supplied, and report improper cash levels in the drawer.
Verify register balances at the beginning and end of each shift where applicable.
Communicate on the intercom or telephone, answer customer questions, and follow up with appropriate personnel as needed.
Remain aware of surroundings to support store safety and security.
Assist management with displays and decorations for promotions and events as needed.
Assist in other store areas and complete special projects as assigned.
Follow personal hygiene and dress standards, Hy-Vee policies, and store guidelines.
Report to work as scheduled and on time.
