About The Position

Performs the role of a Surgical Technologist, with specialty training utilized daily in an inpatient setting for Neuro, CVOR, Ophthalmology, Difficult Airway, or Transplant. Staff will take specialty call for these teams based on their experience. This role supports teams taking specialty call by assisting during call hours. Duties include coordinating instrumentation and sterile field needs, preparing the surgical field and back table, assisting the surgeon and other operating room staff, and maintaining sterile fields. The position requires adherence to standards from multiple industry agencies (TJC, AAMI, AST, FDA, CDC) and the ability to take call, including weekends. Requirements

  • Successful completion of a Surgical Technology program or Surgical Technologist training in the U.S. Armed Forces.
  • Surgical Technologist Certification with NBSTSA; or may accept NCCT certification IF employed as a surgical tech in state prior to January 1, 2008 or has completed a surgical tech military training program.
  • Ability to complete 15 hours of mandatory ST education annually required.
  • For CVOR: Ability to setup and scrub new technology procedures such as TAVR, LVAD, Impella, Ablation, Transmyocardio Laser, Assist Devices and Endovascular cases.
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of the Heart Lung Machine and its function with the cardiovascular system in regard to cannulation of the patient.
  • Must be able to take call, including weekends.

Nice To Haves

  • Specialty training for Neuro, CVOR, Ophthalmology, Difficult Airway, or Transplant being utilized on a daily basis.
  • Specialty call experience for Neuro, CVOR, Ophthalmology, Difficult Airway, or Transplant teams.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares the Operating Room for cases by opening sterile supplies, setting up the back table, and arranging instruments and supplies according to the type of case and surgeon's preference card.
  • Provides technical assistance with patient preparation and specialty equipment.
  • Assists the surgical team during the operative procedure.
  • Assists in maintaining correct surgical counts, identifies and cares for specimens, and handles drugs and solutions under the direction of the RN.
  • Maintains sterile field during surgical procedures.
  • Adheres to accepted standards for providing safe patient care in the surgical environment.
  • Complies with policies addressing safe working conditions and reports unsafe working conditions.
  • Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures and performs terminal cleaning at the end of the day.
  • Returns unused supplies, instruments, and extra equipment to proper storage.
  • Models Prisma Health behavior expectations.
  • Assists with coaching, mentoring, and training coworkers as assigned.
  • Trains and assists with the integration of new team members.
  • Shares knowledge, ideas, and expertise to support the team and the department.
  • Maintains all responsibilities and performs all duties included in specialty team assignment, including separate call schedule and ongoing education as applicable.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
