About The Position

This position is for a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) with specialty training in Neuro, CVOR, Ophthalmology, Difficult Airway, or Transplant, working in an inpatient setting. The role involves coordinating instrumentation and sterile field needs, preparing the surgical field, assisting the surgeon and other operating room staff during procedures. The CST is expected to adhere to the standards and guidelines of multiple industry agencies (TJC, AAMI, AST, FDA, CDC) and must be available for specialty call, including weekends. Key responsibilities also include preparing the Operating Room, providing technical assistance for patient and equipment preparation, assisting the surgical team with counts, specimen handling, and solutions under RN direction, maintaining a sterile field, ensuring safe patient care, cleaning rooms, managing supplies, and contributing to team development through coaching and training.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a Surgical Technology program or Surgical Technologist training in the U.S. Armed Forces.
  • No previous experience required.
  • Current with mandatory 15 hours annually of ST continuing education AND either have been employed as a ST in S.C. prior to Jan. 1, 2008, OR have completed a ST military training program (in lieu of education requirement only).
  • Surgical Technologist Certification with NBSTSA; or will accept NCCT certification IF employed as a surgical tech in S.C. prior to January 1, 2008 or has completed a surgical tech military training program.
  • Maintains surgical technology certification.
  • Ability to complete 15 hours of mandatory ST education annually.
  • For CVOR: Ability to setup and scrub new technology procedures such as TAVR, LVAD, Impella, Ablation, Transmyocardio Laser, Assist Devices and Endovascular cases.
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of the Heart Lung Machine and its function with the cardiovascular system in regards to cannulation of the patient.

Responsibilities

  • Performs role of Surgical Technologist, with specialty training for Neuro, CVOR, Ophthalmology, Difficult Airway, or Transplant being utilized on a daily basis in an inpatient setting.
  • Take specialty call for these teams as per their specialty experience.
  • Coordinate instrumentation and sterile field needs for the procedure.
  • Prepare the surgical field/back table.
  • Assist surgeon at the field during procedure.
  • Assist other operating room staff as needed.
  • Work within the standards and guidelines of multiple industry agencies (including, but not limiting to TJC, AAMI, AST, FDA, CDC).
  • Prepare the Operating Room for cases by opening sterile supplies, setting up the back table, and arranging instruments and supplies according to type of case and surgeon's preference card.
  • Provide technical assistance with preparation of patient and any specialty equipment.
  • Assist the surgical team during the operative procedure.
  • Assist in maintaining correct surgical counts, identifies and cares for specimens, handles drugs and solutions under direction of the RN.
  • Maintain sterile field during surgical procedures.
  • Adhere to accepted standards for provision of safe patient care in the surgical environment.
  • Comply with policies addressing safe working conditions; reports unsafe working conditions.
  • Clean and prepare rooms between procedures and terminally clean at the end of the day.
  • Return unused supplies and instruments and extra equipment to proper storage.
  • Model Prisma Health behavior expectations.
  • Assist with coaching, mentoring and training coworkers as assigned.
  • Train and assist with integration of new team members.
  • Share knowledge, ideas, and expertise to support the team and the department.
  • Maintain all responsibilities and performs all duties included in specialty team assignment, including separate call schedule and ongoing education as applicable.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
