About The Position

The Certified Surgical Technician's primary duty is to assist the physician and staff in the performance of procedures. The Certified Surgical Technician will monitor and assist with OSC room turn over between cases. Assists the Instrument Room with daily instrument needs as well as anticipated needs for upcoming scheduled cases. Receives assignments, prepares self and the procedure room, maintains sterile technique, maintains the integrity of specimens and the procedure site, promotes safety through proper handling of supplies and equipment. Educates surgical techs on new supplies and procedures. Precepts new surgical techs. Super user for supplies and procedures. Monitors surgical techs for compliance on established and new processes and sterile tech.

Requirements

  • 2 years of experience Surgical technologist /special procedures
  • Certified as a Surgical Technologist (CST) from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), or from the National Certification for Competency Testing (NCCT)
  • Basic Life Support Health Care Provider American Heart Association

Responsibilities

  • Assist the physician and staff in the performance of procedures.
  • Monitor and assist with OR room turn over between cases.
  • Assist the Instrument Room with daily instrument needs as well as anticipated needs for upcoming scheduled cases.
  • Receive assignments, prepare self and the procedure room, maintain sterile technique, maintain the integrity of specimens and the procedure site, promote safety through proper handling of supplies and equipment.
  • Educate surgical techs on new supplies and procedures.
  • Precept new surgical techs.
  • Act as a super user for supplies and procedures.
  • Monitor surgical techs for compliance on established and new processes and sterile technique.
  • Gather necessary equipment and supplies for procedure.
  • Place instruments and supplies in a uniform manner on surgical field maintaining strict sterile technique.
  • Check functional ability of equipment, remove defective and/or dull instruments and supplies.
  • Evaluate new instruments and equipment.
  • Assist members of the team in donning sterile attire.
  • Anticipate the needs of the physician and/or nurse.
  • Prepare surgical site and drape patient.
  • Hand instruments, equipment, and supplies throughout the procedure.
  • Maintain a count of supplies.
  • Assist other team members with room preparation for the next procedure.
  • Prevent patient injury through proper handling of equipment.
  • Inform team members of malfunctioning equipment or unsafe conditions.
  • Dispose of sharp instruments accordingly.
  • Assure proper patient alignment throughout the procedure.
  • Review scheduling board upon arrival to department to identify both daily and upcoming instrument needs.
  • Communicate with charge nurse and other surgical techs to ensure rotation of assignments.
  • Adapt in a positive manner to changes in assignments.
  • Refer to the procedure/physician equipment reference manual as needed.
  • Assist with proper closure of surgical site with established sterile protocol.
  • Inform the nurse/physician of complications at procedure site.
  • Apply appropriate sterile dressing at puncture site or surgical site.
  • Notify supervisor of need to reorder supplies as used.
  • Identify un-sterile, outdated, and contaminated items.
  • Place specimens/blood in appropriate container on sterile field.
  • Transfer specimens/blood off sterile field upon request and communicate source of specimen.
  • Serve as resource person for members of team.
  • Assist with reps in scheduling in-services for staff and doctors on new supplies and procedures.
  • Use time clock appropriately.
  • Read posted hospital and departmental literature.
  • Communicate and assist the Instrument room in order to meet the daily scheduled needs.
  • Participate and lead in room turn over and patient throughput.
  • Collaborate with OR techs to manage instrument conflict and coordinate instrument turn over.
  • Continuously displays a positive attitude that contributes to improving patient satisfaction results.

  • Utilize the service recovery process to address customers’ concerns or complaints.
