About The Position

The Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. In addition to intraoperative duties, the CSFA also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. They perform these functions during the operation under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations. Expectation is for all performed duties to be in accordance with Singing River Health System procedures and policies, accreditation organization, and governing guidance and publications for health care employees.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduate from an accredited Surgical First Assistant Program.
  • Certification as a Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) at hire or within six (6) months of graduation from Surgical First Assistant Program if currently employed as a Surgical Technologist.
  • Certification through NBSTSA, ABSA, OR NCCSA.
  • Maintain certification by completing applicable continuing education.
  • Complete and maintain BCLS certification upon hire and/or transfer.
  • Complete de-escalation training by the end of position orientation (90 days).
  • Must have a valid driver license.
  • Must be able to work schedules assigned, with potential for changes.
  • Must be keyboard proficient.

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of two (2) years’ experience as a surgical technologist preferred.
  • Intermediate knowledge of MS Outlook and Word.

Responsibilities

  • Provide aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions.

  • Use repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers while operating standard office equipment.
  • Perceive the nature of sound at normal speaking levels.
  • Make fine discriminations in sound.
  • Maintain close visual acuity and adjust the eye to bring objects into sharp focus.
  • Demonstrate keen mental faculties/assessment and decision making abilities.
  • Demonstrate superior communication/speaking/enunciation skills.
  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Maintain emotional stability conducive to dealing with high stress levels.
  • Work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Maintain attention to detail and the ability to multi-task in complex situations.
  • Maintain collaborative and respectable working relationships.
  • Possess superior customer service skills and professional etiquette.
  • Use a computer and other office technology proficiently.
  • Demonstrate appropriate clinical judgment and apply appropriate professional skills to a patient population of all ages.
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of AST process standards, and practice within the AST Scope of Practice for “Surgical First Assistant.”
