About The Position

Mission Regional Medical Center is seeking a Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA), also referred to as a Certified Surgical Tech First Assist (CST/First Assistant) or Surgical First Assistant (SFA), to work alongside surgeons in the operating room. This per diem position assists with patient positioning and preparation, sterile-field maintenance, and instrument support. The First Assistant actively participates in procedures by providing exposure, controlling bleeding, suturing, closing incisions, and anticipating the surgeon’s needs to promote safe, efficient, high-quality surgical care. Mission Regional Medical Center is a 297-bed, nonprofit hospital providing inpatient and outpatient services to the Rio Grande Valley. It is a member of Prime Healthcare and has provided care for more than 60 years.

Requirements

Certification in Surgical Technology/Certified First Assistant.
Successful completion of a training program in a recognized First Assistant program.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Provider affirmation by the American Heart Association.
Basic computer skills.

Nice To Haves

Five years of experience in an acute-care operating room in the scrub role, preferred.
Proficiency in Major Vascular, Thoracic, Open Heart, Orthopedics, OB/GYN, and General specialties.

Responsibilities

Assist the surgeon directly during procedures to support safe and efficient surgical outcomes.
Provide exposure to the surgical site through retraction, suctioning, camera guidance, instrument positioning, and tissue manipulation.
Control bleeding by clamping, tying, cauterizing, or applying targeted pressure as directed by the surgeon.
Perform suturing, stapling, incision closures, and drain placements, and apply surgical dressings at the completion of procedures.
Position and prepare patients for surgery while maintaining a proper sterile field.
Anticipate the surgeon’s needs before they are requested.
