About The Position

We are hiring a Certified Sterile Processing Tech to join our team! This is a Full-Time Evenings position, working from 3:00pm to 11:30pm. Certified Sterile Processing Technicians are allied health professionals and an integral part of the Perioperative Department healthcare team, responsible for providing sterilized equipment for surgical procedures. Working under the supervision of a Sterile Processing Department Manager, supervisor, or designee, they maintain high standards of decontamination, assembly, inspection, wrapping, and sterilization of surgical instruments for various departments. This includes operating cart washers and sterilizers, putting away sterile instruments and supplies, and collaborating with OR staff to ensure timely delivery of sterile products and case carts. The role emphasizes maintaining a consistent workflow between the OR and Sterile Processing while providing excellent customer service. The Sterile Processing Technician reports to the Manager of the Sterile Processing Department and the RN Director of Surgical Services.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate/GED
  • Graduate of an accredited CST Program
  • New grad to experienced Certified Sterile Processing Technician
  • Certification, as a certified surgical technologist (CST), conferred by the National Board of Surgical technology and Surgery Assisting (NBSTSA)
  • Certification, as a certified Sterile Processing Department Technician (CSPDT), conferred by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)
  • Certification, as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST), conferred by The International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM)

Nice To Haves

  • One or more consecutive years of experience working as a Certified Sterile Processing Technician
  • Active membership in a local or national chapter of The International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM)
  • Active membership in a local or national chapter of the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST)

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate high standards of decontamination, assembly, inspecting, wrapping and sterilization of surgical instrument for Surgical Services, 0B Services, and all other ancillary departments.
  • Load and unload cart washers and various sterilizers and put away sterile instruments and supplies.
  • Work in conjunction with the OR staff to provide timely sterile products, trays and case carts where applicable.
  • Maintain consistency and continuous workflow between the OR and Sterile Processing while practicing above average customer service.
  • Successfully complete hospital and unit-based orientation programs.
  • Successfully complete annual hospital and unit-based required competencies and education.
  • Establish priorities and prepare for emergency situations during scheduled work hours and scheduled on-call hours.
  • Accept constructive feedback to improve job performance and collaborate with Manager, CUE and/or Shift Supervisor to make necessary adjustments.
  • Attend staff meetings to remain knowledgeable in department updates and practices.
  • Collaborate with other members of the healthcare team to determine instrument priorities for case needs.
  • Comply with established policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate and develop staff, provide leadership by example on proper department procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate infection prevention strategies to prevent surgical site infections.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the procedure being performed and anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
  • Effectively communicate, both written and verbal, with co-workers.
  • Ensure compliance with all clinical expectations regarding regulatory requirements such as: improved on time starts initiatives; and reduction in surgical site infections.
  • Ensure that all instrument sets are properly arranged and organized.
  • Participate in continuing education and achieving/maintaining certification.
  • Perform patient care according to guidelines provided thru the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI); the Associate of surgical Technologist (AST); and the Association of peri-Operative Nurses (AORN).
  • Demonstrate knowledge of standard and transmission-based precautions to reduce the risk of cross-contamination by using appropriate disinfectant according to pathogen present in the environment.
  • Inspect, assemble, package and sterilize medical devices following manufacturer’s recommendations and established procedure.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment and fill surgical case cart requisitions using hospital computer system.
  • Operate cleaning and sterilization equipment in the department according to manufacturer’s recommendations and established procedure.
  • Provide clinical guidance to surgical technology students and ancillary staff.
  • Recognize the importance of hand hygiene and perform appropriate hand hygiene techniques.
  • Recognize the importance of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) while in the decontamination area and appropriately don and doff PPE.
  • Responsible for demonstrating competency for all new equipment and processes.
  • Participate in the orientation of new Sterile Processing associates.
  • Retrieve used cast carts when needed from patient care areas and return to SPD for appropriate processing.
  • Serve on unit-based committees.
  • Responsible and accountable for own professional growth and development thru local and national AST and/or I IAHCSMM chapter involvement.
  • Responsible for decontamination and cleaning of surgical instruments and other medical equipment following established policy and procedure.
