About The Position

This job description outlines the essential functions of a Certified Nursing Assistant within the Nursing Department. The role involves direct and indirect patient care for patients aged 18 and older, requiring age-specific experience or training. The Certified Nursing Assistant performs routine tasks in patient care, bedside nursing, and documentation under the general supervision of a Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse and/or Registered Nurse. This position provides direct patient care to adult and geriatric patients.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Hospital experience as a nursing assistant, certification as a nursing assistant, or actively enrolled nursing student.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Capability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with others.
  • BLS certification upon hire.
  • Ability to maintain assigned work hours, requiring endurance to perform assigned tasks over long periods during working hours.
  • Demonstrates competency in all areas of duties and responsibilities.
  • Universal precautions will be observed in order to prevent contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials.

Responsibilities

  • Performs vital signs accurately, including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
  • Measures and records fluid and food intake and output, and records calorie count accurately.
  • Performs weights accurately.
  • Performs treatments and procedures appropriately, including collecting specimens, giving sitz baths, assisting in physical examinations, special treatments or postmortem care, and transporting patients.
  • Cleans equipment and instruments appropriately, maintaining a clean work environment.
  • Maintains cleanliness of various instruments and equipment such as bedpans, urinals, and wheelchairs, ensuring proper labeling and storage.
  • Keeps the patient’s room in clean and orderly condition, making beds, replacing soiled linen, straightening bedside tables, discarding trash, and keeping window ledges free of clutter.
  • Maintains unit stock levels of supplies and equipment as directed, assisting in restocking rooms and checking inventory.
  • Performs patient care activities appropriately, including bathing, oral hygiene, care of hair, and oral feeding.
  • Answers patient lights and performs services in a timely manner.
  • Participates in hourly rounds.
  • Reports any unusual circumstances or change in patient’s condition to the LPN and/or Supervisor.
  • Recognizes and communicates cardiopulmonary arrest and initiates basic life support.
  • Observes patients for unusual symptoms or signs of illness and reports significant findings to LPN/Supervisor.
  • Practices good isolation techniques to maintain a safe environment and to control the spread of infection.
  • Provides a level of competency to patients ages 18 and older, involving adults with care planning and identifying their normal patterns of living, and striving to understand geriatric patients by speaking distinctly, moving slowly, involving family, explaining procedures, providing rest periods, and listening to concerns.
  • Upholds all service standards including safety, communication, courtesy, presentation, and efficiency.
