Certified Medical Assistant
About The Position
The Certified Medical Assistant is a member of the Patient Centered Health Care Home team and assists providers and team members with coordinating, preparing for, examining, and treating patients. The position performs the minimum competency requirements for a medical assistant and requires regular, reliable on-site attendance. The role includes reviewing patient records and care gaps before visits; supporting patient check-in and check-out; recording vital signs and other measurements; carrying out clinical procedures and orders according to protocols and provider direction; administering ordered medication; assisting with simple wound dressings; completing laboratory orders; and making referrals as needed. Administrative work includes preparing exam rooms, managing supplies and forms, scheduling appointments, following up with patients, sterilizing and packing instruments, handling calls, and contacting patients about laboratory or other reports. The Medical Assistant operates basic medical equipment and documents consistently in the electronic medical record (EMR). The position also involves communicating with providers and other team members to enhance patient care, participating in huddles, education programs, and meetings, contributing feedback to quality improvement, providing excellent customer service, maintaining competence, and following safety and security procedures. Other related duties may be assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Medical Assistant certification.
- One-year certificate from a college or technical school, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Current BCLS/CPR certification.
- Previous experience with basic computer systems.
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
- Ability to perform arithmetic with whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; compute rates, ratios, and percentages; and draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to understand and carry out written, oral, or diagrammed instructions and deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Regular and reliable on-site attendance is required.

Responsibilities
- Review patient records before visits, remind patients of appointments as needed, check completion of previous orders, ensure reports are available, and review care gaps.
- Perform patient check-in duties, including accurately recording vital signs and measurements, updating information required for meaningful use and PCHCH, and carrying out check-in clinical procedures according to protocols.
- Perform patient check-out duties and carry out clinical procedures and orders as directed by the provider.
- Administer medication as ordered by the provider and assist with simple wound dressings as needed.
- Refer patients as necessary and complete laboratory orders accurately.
- Prepare patient examination rooms, inventory supplies, complete forms, and follow up on no-shows and scheduling as needed.
- Sterilize, label, and pack instruments as needed.
- Retrieve and return calls from patients, staff, and community agencies; call patients regarding laboratory and other reports; and schedule appointments as needed.
- Operate basic medical equipment and document consistently and appropriately in the EMR.
- Communicate with providers and other team members to enhance patient care.
- Attend and participate in PCMH huddles, in-service education programs, and meetings as required.
- Provide excellent customer service and promote a positive image of KPHC.
- Provide feedback for quality improvement activities and maintain and improve personal competence.
- Arrive promptly, notify a supervisor when lateness or absence is imminent, answer phones within a reasonable time, and take accurate messages.
- Follow safety and security procedures, report potentially unsafe conditions, determine appropriate actions beyond guidelines, and use equipment and materials properly.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
