The CDL-A Regional Driver operates dry van freight across states west of the Mississippi, including lanes covering the Northwest, the Rockies, California, and Texas. Drivers average about 1,900 miles and approximately $1,400 per week, with home time every two weeks. Work is mostly drop-and-hook and preloaded trailers, with some live loads and unloads. Winter routes may include snow in northern passes, and the fleet plans for winter conditions. Both new CDL holders and experienced drivers are hired. New drivers receive training pay of $900 per week and spend 3 to 5 weeks (200 to 250 hours) with a mentor before receiving their own truck after sign-off. Experienced drivers need at least six months of recent tractor-trailer experience, receive mileage pay based on verifiable experience, and start solo after orientation. Solo drivers may receive a performance bonus of up to six cents per mile; stops pay $15, and required unloads are paid. New solo drivers receive a $1,000 weekly guarantee for their first three months. Orientation takes two days or less and pays $300 once hired. A one-way bus ticket to orientation is reimbursed with a receipt. Drivers use late-model tractors averaging about 1.5 years old, with automatic or 10-speed transmissions. An approved dog up to 40 pounds is permitted after new-driver training, and solo drivers may use the adult rider program. Benefits begin after 30 days.
