The CDL-A Flatbed Trainee learns flatbed operations through paid orientation, a securement class, and mentored driving. Orientation lasts up to two days; lodging is covered, bus fare is reimbursed, and the driver receives $300 once hired. The securement class pays $140 per day for five days, followed by three to five weeks of mentor driving (about 200–250 hours) at $650 per week. The role hauls open-deck freight across the western states, including Texas, averaging about 2,600 miles per week. Drivers are home every two weeks. The work involves climbing onto the deck and securing loads with straps, chains, and tarps. Compensation averages $1,300–$1,500 per week ($67,600–$78,000 annually), starting at $0.50 per mile, increasing to $0.52 at six months and $0.54 at 18 months, then increasing thereafter. Additional pay includes $65 for tarping and $15 for each extra stop beyond the first and last. A $1,000 weekly minimum applies for three months after the first solo dispatch. Pay is weekly by direct deposit. The assigned truck is a late-model Freightliner averaging about 1.5 years old, with an automatic or 10-speed transmission. After 30 days, benefits include medical, dental, vision and prescription coverage; 401(k); life and disability coverage; paid vacation; and free online college for the employee and one family member. An approved adult rider is allowed, and one dog under 40 pounds is allowed after training. Eligible veterans may receive up to six or more years of military service credited toward their pay rate as driving experience.
