About The Position

The Carpenter is a year-round position responsible for maintaining and repairing Xanterra facilities and assets through advanced carpentry skills and a strong commitment to safety and quality workmanship. In addition to technical responsibilities, this role serves as a mentor and trainer for seasonal maintenance employees, supporting skill development, reinforcing safety standards, and helping integrate seasonal staff into maintenance operations. The Carpenter plays a key role in preserving institutional knowledge, improving workforce capability, and ensuring consistency in workmanship across the season.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional carpentry experience.
  • Proficiency in rough carpentry, framing, forming, and mill-work (cabinets, counter-tops, shelving, windows, doors).
  • Skilled in proper use and maintenance of carpentry tools, including power tools.
  • Knowledge of wood grades, building materials, and OSHA/NFPA safety regulations.
  • Ability to recognize and correct unsafe practices or non-compliant installations.
  • Proficient computer skills and adaptability to new procedures.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn new techniques.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and comply with respiratory protection regulations.
  • Walk up to 0.5 miles over uneven terrain; climb stairs and ladders; work in varied weather conditions at elevations above 6,000 ft.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Perform heavy labor outdoors.
  • Must be at least 21 years old with a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Perform troubleshooting and apply advanced carpentry skills for the safe operation, repair, and seasonal opening/closing of facilities and equipment.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance, repairs, and replacements on structural framing, building envelopes, flooring, cabinetry, trim, and other wood-based systems.
  • Support historic preservation work in accordance with established standards and guidance.
  • Select and use appropriate tools and materials safely and efficiently.
  • Serve as a mentor to seasonal maintenance employees, providing hands-on training in carpentry techniques, safety practices, and proper tool use.
  • Support on-boarding of seasonal staff by reinforcing department expectations, work standards, and safe work practices.
  • Provide coaching, guidance, and real-time feedback to improve skill development and work quality.
  • Assist in delivering structured carpentry and safety training for maintenance personnel.
  • Promote accountability and consistency by modeling professional behavior and workmanship standards.
  • Assist the Historic Preservation Crew (HPC) Manager with training initiatives for location staff.
  • Reinforce preservation standards and proper techniques when working in historic structures.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and cooperative work environment.
  • Identify, address, and report unsafe conditions or practices.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision; flexibility to work overtime or nights as needed.
