About The Position

The Carpenter/Painter prepares, levels, and paints surfaces and performs carpentry duties under general supervision. The role constructs, alters, and repairs building components and furnishings, and refinishes woodwork and furniture using appropriate stains and varnishes. It may also involve moving and storing furniture and equipment and performing snow removal.

Employees are expected to abide by and promote the mission and core values of the Spirit of Mercy. The work takes place both indoors and outdoors in a hospital environment and involves exposure to temperature extremes, noise, vibration, hazards, and airborne substances. The position requires frequent physical activity and heavy work, as well as courtesy and cooperation when dealing with employees, residents, and visitors.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Ability to perform simple arithmetic calculations.
• Valid Iowa driver’s license.
• At least one year of carpentry and painting experience.
• Any equivalent background.
• Complete Mandatory Reporter abuse training for child and dependent adult abuse within three months of hire.
• Ability to perform heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 40 pounds frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds constantly.
• Ability to maintain courtesy and cooperation and satisfactory performance in a stressful hospital work environment.
• Adaptability to accepting responsibility for directing, controlling, or planning activities; making decisions based on measurable or verifiable criteria; and performing varied duties without loss of efficiency or composure.

Responsibilities

• Construct, alter, and repair rafters, walls, doors, paneling, windows, furniture, trim, and framing.
• Refinish doors, woodwork, and furniture with appropriate stain and varnish.
• Prepare, level, and paint surfaces using accepted coating methods.
• Move and store furniture and equipment without causing damage.
• May perform snow removal.
• Abide by and promote the mission and core values of the Spirit of Mercy.
