About The Position

The Cargo Specialist communicates customer delivery needs and appointment dates and times, quotes rates to customers, and relays service requirements to dispatchers. The role schedules customer delivery orders, enters orders into the dispatch computer system, and supports port, rail, and trucking operations. It also includes verifying rail billing and customs documentation, tracking containers and export bookings, preparing customer reports, and helping improve customer service. The specialist may work as a dispatcher when volume or vacation schedules require it and may take on other projects assigned by management.

Responsibilities

• Receive and schedule delivery orders and requests from customers, exercising discretion and independent judgment when communicating customer requests and schedules to dispatch.
• Enter all orders into the computer system for dispatch; technical lines require specialized training, experience, or transportation-industry knowledge.
• Ensure rail billing is in place before containers are delivered to the railroad and, when necessary, ensure in-bond documentation is properly validated with US Customs.
• Verify that bookings are released at depots for export moves and trace import containers on the rail to confirm delivery by the last free day.
• Prepare customer reports and perform tracking and tracing as required, including divisional pool, MDR, CNI, Daily Activity, and Dispatch Status reports.
• Notify the Cargo Specialist Supervisor or management of all service failures.
• Propose and implement solutions to improve overall customer service.
• Create and update location profiles in the computer system.
• Work as a dispatcher as volume or vacation schedules dictate.
• Complete other projects as assigned by management.
