The Building Services Technician provides hands on facilities support across Catholic Charities’ shelter and residential facilities. This role performs routine maintenance, repairs, inspections, preventive maintenance, room preparation, and general building services to ensure safe, clean, and fully operational environments for residents, staff, and program operations. This position is intended for an individual who demonstrates reliability, technical capability, professionalism, good judgment, and a strong commitment to supporting vulnerable populations. The technician works directly within shelter environments and must maintain discretion, appropriate boundaries, and compliance with all safety, security, and program requirements.

Requirements

High school diploma or G.E.D.
Two (2) or more years of experience in building maintenance, facilities, apartment maintenance, construction, handyman work, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or related field preferred.
Valid Texas Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
Knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, life safety, and general building systems.
Experience managing vendors, contractors, bids, and work orders.
Excellent organizational, communication, and problem solving skills.
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and respond to urgent facility needs.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and comfort with facility related software.
Ability to maintain accurate records and handle confidential information.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with staff, vendors, volunteers, and external partners.
Ability to work in both office and field environments, including shelter settings.

Nice To Haves

One (1) year of experience working in shelters, residential facilities, schools, healthcare facilities, multifamily housing, or similar environments is a plus.
Bilingual (English/Spanish)

Responsibilities

Perform routine building maintenance and minor repairs involving plumbing, electrical, lighting, fixtures, doors, locks, furniture, walls, and other building components.
Troubleshoot basic facility and equipment issues and determine when specialized contractors are required.
Complete preventive maintenance activities according to established schedules, including replacing filters, bulbs, fixtures, hardware, and other components.
Assist with painting, patching, assembly, installation, and general repair work.
Conduct routine inspections of shelter and residential areas to identify maintenance, safety, or facility concerns.
Prepare rooms, common areas, and program spaces for resident use and program operations.
Coordinate work with shelter and program staff to minimize disruption to residents and services.
Maintain appropriate professional boundaries when working around children, families, and other vulnerable populations.
Respond quickly and professionally to facility needs that may impact resident safety or program continuity.
Ensure overall facility safety by promptly reporting safety or security concerns, maintaining safe and operational exits, walkways, doors, and lighting, and supporting fire/life safety inspections, corrective actions, and emergency procedures.
Maintain tools, equipment, maintenance areas, and supplies in a safe, clean, and organized condition.
Assist with emergency facility repairs as needed, including after hours response.
Assist the Facilities Manager with renovations, moves, furniture installation, equipment replacement, and other facility projects.
Verify completion of assigned maintenance work and report outstanding issues.
Travel between assigned agency facilities as needed.
