About The Position

The Village of Buffalo Grove is seeking an experienced, forward-thinking Public Works Crew Leader within the Building Maintenance Section. This position performs skilled work involving the maintenance, repair, and alteration of municipal buildings, building systems, and street lighting installations while serving in a crew leader capacity. Under the general direction of the Building Maintenance Manager, the position is responsible for performing a wide variety of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, mechanical, and general building maintenance work. Duties include, but are not limited to, the maintenance, repair, and alteration of municipally owned buildings and related systems, as well as assisting with the maintenance and repair of the Village’s street lighting systems. Work assignments involve tasks of greater difficulty that require specialized knowledge, technical skills, and practical experience gained through training and on-the-job experience. The employee is expected to work independently on routine assignments and use sound judgment when identifying and addressing maintenance issues. More difficult or complex projects are performed with direction from the department Manager. This position is distinguished from other Building Maintenance Workers by its responsibility to serve in a crew leader capacity and provide day to day leadership and direction to other employees when the Manager is unavailable. The position also assists with coordinating work, prioritizing maintenance needs, and ensuring assigned work is completed safely, efficiently, and to established standards. Work is performed under general supervision with the use of Cartegraph asset management software to document, track, and manage maintenance activities. Work is subject to review and inspection during the assignment and upon completion to ensure proper results, quality of work, and compliance with established procedures. Serves as Crew Leader for an assigned crew, assists with on-the-job training of new employees, and acts in a lead capacity as needed in the absence of the Manager. Performs a variety of maintenance work, including plumbing repairs, carpentry, roof maintenance, HVAC maintenance, preventive maintenance, private contractor oversight and streetlight repairs. Uses Cartegraph on mobile devices to receive, document, track labor and materials, and close out facility maintenance work orders. Operates trucks equipped with snowplows and salt spreaders for snow and ice control. Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

• Considerable knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, and materials used in building maintenance work.
• Comprehensive working knowledge of electrical distribution systems, including low and high voltage circuitry, and troubleshooting.
• Knowledge of operating and maintenance requirements for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment.
• Skill in using the hand and power tools and equipment required for the work.
• Ability to navigate and enter data into Cartegraph or similar asset management software via mobile devices.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
• Ability to meet physical requirements as may be established by competent authority.
• Possession of a valid Class "B" Illinois Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brakes endorsement, or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.

Nice To Haves

• Completion of a recognized HVAC/R trade school, apprenticeship, certificate program, or other relevant skilled-trades training is preferred (an equivalent combination of training and progressively responsible facilities maintenance experience will be considered).
• Minimum of five (5) years of public works experience is preferred.
• HVAC-related schooling, training, certifications, or licenses are preferred.
• EPA Section 608 Universal Certification is preferred.
• Additional trade certifications are desirable, including HVAC/R, electrical, plumbing, or building automation systems (BAS).

Responsibilities

• Follow safety policies, procedures, and recognized safe work practices.
• Report all unsafe conditions and acts to a supervisor by the end of the workday.
• Report all accidents to a supervisor immediately.

Benefits

• The current salary range for this position is $83,605.60 - $124,600.32. Starting salary commensurate with experience but, typically no higher than the mid-point of the range.
