About The Position

Under the direction of the Public Works Superintendent, this role leads, oversees, reviews, and performs work activities and duties assigned to the parks and streets maintenance crews. The Maintenance Crew Leader assumes responsibility for more difficult and complex tasks and performs other related duties as necessary. This is the advanced journey-level class within the maintenance series, responsible for leading and overseeing the work of crews maintaining parks and streets. Incumbents are subject to the Alcohol/Drug Testing requirements of the Department of Transportation.

Requirements

Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary for a Maintenance Crew Leader.
At least three years of experience performing parks or street maintenance.
A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
Possession of a valid class "A" California driver's license with tanker endorsement.
Knowledge of operations and standard operating procedures of park and street maintenance programs.
Knowledge of complex principles and practices of parks and street maintenance.
Knowledge of methods and techniques of lead supervision, training, and motivation.
Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.
Knowledge of operational characteristics of parks maintenance standard equipment.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Knowledge of methods and techniques for record keeping.
Knowledge of parks construction and maintenance equipment.
Knowledge of the operation, care, and preventive maintenance techniques for maintenance equipment.
Knowledge of practices, methods, and materials used in general construction, grounds maintenance, street maintenance, and general maintenance work.
Ability to operate a variety of City equipment.
Ability to plan, organize and direct the work of subordinate staff.
Ability to supervise subordinate staff.
Ability to supervise and oversee the operations and activities of park and street maintenance.

Responsibilities

Lead, oversee, review, and perform the work of staff responsible for parks and streets maintenance including irrigation system maintenance, tree and brush maintenance, general landscape maintenance of City parks and rights-of-way, shooting and establishing grades to ensure correct drainage; determining the correct amount of materials and labor needed; checking for and ensuring the protection of gas, electric, water and communication lines before proceeding; assisting in bid preparations; and preparing sketches and plans for proposed projects
Supervise the operation and maintenance of parks and streets maintenance equipment and/or machinery including light and heavy equipment.
Assist in the training of lower level personnel in the areas of work; ensure adherence to safe work methods, procedures and practices; identify training opportunities and needs; make recommendations to higher level staff.
Coordinate assigned work activities with other work crews within the City and with outside organizations.
Evaluate work sites and determine equipment, material, and personnel needs for the task at hand; obtain necessary equipment and tools; coordinate and schedule the utilization of maintenance personnel.
Perform routine field checks to ensure work accuracy and proper and safe work methods by members of the maintenance crew; enforce compliance with proper work methods and safety regulations.
Maintain accurate records for work in progress, completed, and planned.
Maintain an adequate inventory of commonly used materials by maintenance crews; initiate purchase requisitions to acquire necessary materials and equipment.
Read and interpret blue prints, schematics, drawings, sketches, and other documents.
Place road barricades and cones to set up a safe work area for work crews; perform traffic control duties as necessary.
Respond to questions and concerns from the general public; provide information as is appropriate and resolve service complaints.
Performs other related duties as required.
Assists in the development and implementation of goals, annual work plans, policies and procedures for assigned City facilities and services.
Participates in the selection, training, coordination and supervision of staff and volunteers.
May assist with the development and administration of Division budget.
Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
Perform other duties as assigned.
