Reporting to the Supervisor, Building Inspections and the Supervisor, Special Investigations, you will conduct site inspections of residential construction, including building, HVAC, plumbing and on-site sewage systems, to ensure compliance with the Ontario Building Code, Municipal By-laws and other applicable legislation. You will perform administrative duties related to the review, monitoring and closure of open building permits, investigate suspected illegal occupancy of new homes, issue field inspection reports, and support enforcement activities in accordance with established practices. The successful candidate will possess strong knowledge of residential construction and be capable of conducting inspections independently with minimal supervision to support the reduction of inspection backlogs and open permit inventories.

Requirements

  • College diploma in Architecture, Architectural Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, Building Science, Construction Engineering Technology or a related discipline.
  • Eligible for membership in AATO or OACETT.
  • Minimum four (4) years of experience in municipal building services, building inspections, permit administration, code enforcement, or residential construction.
  • Possess a valid Building Code Identification Number (BCIN) with minimum qualifications in: General Legal/Process, House 2012, Plumbing – House, HVAC – House, On-Site Sewage Systems
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, Building Code Act, applicable legislation and municipal by-laws.
  • Experience reviewing and facilitating the closure of open building permits.
  • Ability to conduct residential building inspections, issue Orders and compliance notices, and make code compliance decisions
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and construction drawings
  • Excellent communication, customer service and organizational skills.
  • Good computer skills.
  • Valid Ontario Class G Driver's license and use of personal vehicle for business purposes required.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record and Judicial Matters check

Nice To Haves

  • Part 3 Building Code qualifications are considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate and conduct all Building Code construction inspections related to housing projects
  • Conduct inspections of on-site sewage (septic) systems to verify compliance with the Ontario Building Code and applicable legislation.
  • Review suspected illegal occupancies and issue Orders, notices and other compliance documents in accordance with applicable legislation and departmental practices.
  • Investigate open permits and issue Orders, notices and related compliance documents in accordance with the Building Code Act, Building By-law, applicable legislation and established departmental practices.
