A Bookseller is an integral member of the Barnes & Noble bookselling team, welcoming customers, answering questions, and helping readers find suitable books and products. The role also supports the attractive presentation and efficient operation of the store by unpacking and shelving deliveries, maintaining displays, and serving customers at the register. Booksellers are expected to demonstrate reliable attendance, flexibility in responding to store scheduling needs, a positive and dependable approach to work, consideration for colleagues, cheerful customer service, and willingness to learn. The role involves mastering operational competencies, including using store technology, merchandising and maintaining store sections, processing transactions, receiving and shelving deliveries, locating products, assisting the café team when needed, and applying loss-prevention and de-escalation procedures. As knowledge and experience grow, Booksellers build familiarity with books and other store categories, maintain sections and backstock, make recommendations, and support sales objectives and new releases. Booksellers may work in other stores when able and needed to support the wider Cluster. They are expected to comply with company policies and procedures and, as they demonstrate mastery, advance toward the Senior Bookseller career-path step.
