Barista (Food Service Worker)
About The Position
This Non-appropriated Fund (NAF) position is assigned to the Community Center at Davis-Monthan AFB. It is a flexible position and does not include benefits. The Barista prepares specialty beverages in a free-standing specialty coffee operation, operates a commercial-grade espresso machine, and serves food and beverages to patrons. Duties also include maintaining equipment and the work area, cleaning, handling payments and stock, and assisting with inventory and cash accountability. Work is completed independently after instructions, with a supervisor available for guidance and to resolve customer dissatisfaction. The position requires a favorable background investigation and pre-employment physical, as well as obtaining a Food Handler’s Certificate or completing food-handler training.
Requirements
- Experience in and knowledge of methods and procedures relating to specialty coffee preparation or similar activity.
- Knowledge of a variety of drink recipes, coffee beans, and teas typically served at a specialty coffee operation.
- Ability to safely use equipment such as an espresso machine and memorize specialty coffee drink recipes.
- Ability to hear and follow oral and/or written instructions, work safely, and perform simple arithmetic.
- Ability to frequently lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to continuously stand, walk, stoop, push, pull, and bend for long periods.
- Ability to obtain a Food Handler’s Certificate and/or complete food-handler training.
- Satisfactory completion of a pre-employment physical.
- Satisfactory completion of a Tier 1 National Agency Check with inquiries (NACI) background investigation.
Responsibilities
- Prepare specialty coffee and other non-alcoholic beverages to customer requests and established recipes, adjusting ingredients or recipes when requested.
- Operate a commercial-grade espresso machine, grind coffee beans, dose and tamp ground coffee, and obtain the desired extraction.
- Serve alcoholic beverages such as beer upon request.
- Prepare and serve assorted food items, including sandwiches, cookies, muffins, and pastries.
- Serve patrons, receive payments, operate the cash register, and return change.
- Maintain the coffee machine in good working order using appropriate cleaning and sanitation methods.
- Open or close the facility when required; set up the work area and obtain a cash bank.
- Keep the work area neat and clean, set up and clean customer tables, and replenish condiments and stock.
- Set up and operate the dishwasher; clean and maintain it, and clean glassware, dishes, and utensils.
- Perform heavy-duty cleaning, including cleaning coffee machines, ceilings, areas under and behind equipment, refrigerators, floors, and walls, and sanitizing garbage cans.
- Unload and organize deliveries when required; collect and transfer trash to the disposal area.
- Assist with inventories and identify items for reordering.
- Prepare documentation for cash-fund accountability when required.
- Complete other related duties as assigned.
