About the position
We are seeking a commercial attorney to support the APAC region in the development and commercialization of trading card games, with a focus on Magic: The Gathering and Duel Masters. The ideal candidate should have a strong understanding of commercial matters in the games industry and will work closely with the Senior Attorney to provide support and advice to various teams and departments within our businesses. This role will also involve collaborative projects across Wizards and Hasbro brands, as well as physical and digital product support.
Responsibilities
- Developing and negotiating complex third-party inbound licensing agreements
- Advising on various commercial matters such as sales and distribution issues, anticompetition/antitrust issues, and ecommerce
- Drafting co-branded licensing agreements and negotiating distributor agreements
- Providing day-to-day guidance on legal issues to Wizards Retail Support and events teams
- Developing standard operating procedures to manage contract risks
- Guiding APAC business teams on regulatory and compliance issues, particularly related to anti competition/antitrust, promotions/marketing, and giveaways
- Staying updated on the latest developments in law and technology as they relate to the Wizards business
- Working with APAC business teams to develop best practices for recordkeeping, confidentiality, ethics, and compliance
- Applying technology to improve legal processes and best practices
- Working in a fast-paced environment, handling high volume of work and variety of assignments, and meeting deadlines
Requirements
- Qualified lawyer (U.S. J.D. or foreign equivalent) with minimum 4 years of experience
- Above business level in English and Japanese language
- Strong knowledge in intellectual property law
- Excellent legal drafting and negotiating skills
- Experience negotiating with and against large partners
- Pragmatism in balancing costs and benefits and handling ambiguity
- Ability to build trust and provide legal counsel based on rigorous legal research and learned expertise
- Ability to identify and address risks and/or deficiencies
- Ability to apply technology to improve legal processes and best practices
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, ever-evolving environment
- Ability to handle high volume of work and variety of assignments
- Ability to recognize priorities and meet deadlines
