About The Position

UPMC-GoHealth Urgent Care is seeking an experienced, collaborative physician leader to serve as Associate Medical Director in its Pennsylvania market. The role combines approximately 50% administrative leadership with 50% clinical practice and provides direct leadership for frontline physicians across two regions, supporting approximately 75–100 physicians and a network of about 40 urgent care centers. The position works closely with the Medical Director, operational leadership, advanced practice leadership, site managers, and UPMC stakeholders to advance clinical quality, provider engagement, care coordination, and strategic growth. The Associate Medical Director leads and develops physicians, supports provider performance and quality improvement, helps implement market strategy and operational priorities, and maintains weekly patient-care responsibilities. The role also includes quality oversight, provider chart reviews and performance processes, support for aftercare and results management, leadership across in-person and virtual care, educational initiatives, and shared after-hours and weekend clinical call coverage.

Requirements

MD or DO from an accredited medical school.
Board certification in Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, or Med-Peds.
Current physician licensure or ability to obtain licensure in Pennsylvania.
At least 2 years of physician leadership experience in urgent care, emergency medicine, primary care, or a related clinical setting.
Demonstrated success leading providers and driving clinical quality initiatives.

Responsibilities

Lead, coach, mentor, and directly manage frontline physicians across multiple regions and centers.
Support physician onboarding, orientation, engagement, performance management, and professional development.
Maintain an active clinical practice through weekly patient-care responsibilities.
Provide escalation support for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs).
Participate in shared after-hours and weekend clinical call coverage.
Partner with the Medical Director and health system leaders to execute market strategy and operational priorities.
Advance care coordination initiatives that strengthen patient access, continuity of care, and network integrity.
Support referral pathways and collaborative relationships throughout the UPMC network.
Drive physician alignment with organizational goals, operational standards, and patient experience expectations.
Lead quality assurance and performance improvement programs across the market.
Monitor quality metrics, including antimicrobial stewardship, corticosteroid stewardship, controlled substance utilization, and transfer rates.
Oversee provider chart review, FPPE/OPPE processes, and clinical documentation standards.
Support the GoFollow aftercare and clinical results management program.
Provide leadership across in-person and virtual care delivery, including oversight and support of the Virtual Visit service line.
Lead educational initiatives, including new provider onboarding and APP graduate training programs.
Partner with Regional Directors, Advanced Practice Leaders, and Site Managers.
Promote consistency in clinical workflows, provider performance, and patient experience across centers.
Participate in workforce planning and initiatives supporting sustainable growth and operational excellence.
