Sanford Health hires selected candidates as Associate EMTs while they complete EMT education through the Minnesota Earn While You Learn Grant. Candidates attend an 8-week EMT course administered by Sanford Health Emergency Medical Services Education (SHEMSE), while completing new employee orientation and other assigned tasks. Sanford Health covers 100% of tuition costs, and candidates earn an hourly wage while attending classes and labs. No employment commitment is required after program completion. After successfully completing the course, candidates must pass the applicable exams to obtain national certification and state licensure. State licensure must be obtained within six months of employment. Once licensed, employees may be eligible for an internal promotion to EMT and may be offered PRN, part-time, or full-time EMT positions based on organizational staffing needs. If the employee does not obtain licensure within six months, the department Director evaluates whether employment may continue.
