Sanford Health hires selected candidates as Associate EMTs while they complete an 8-week Emergency Medical Technician course administered by Sanford Health Emergency Medical Services Education (SHEMSE), along with new employee orientation and other assigned tasks. Candidates earn an hourly wage during classes and labs, and Sanford Health covers 100% of tuition costs. There is no employment commitment required after program completion. After completing the course, candidates must pass the applicable exams to obtain national certification and state licensure. State licensure must be obtained within six months of employment. Once licensed, employees may be eligible for promotion to EMT and may be offered PRN, part-time, or full-time EMT positions, depending on organizational staffing needs. If licensure is not obtained within six months, the department Director evaluates whether employment may continue. In an ambulance setting and under a preceptor’s supervision, the Associate EMT uses medical equipment to treat patients and assess injuries or illness. The role also communicates patient and situation information to treatment-center personnel and follows the standards, requirements, and expectations set by SHEMSE.
