About The Position

Go Global is a program that offers international learning experiences for students at UBC and partner universities. These opportunities include study, research, internships, and global seminars worldwide, as well as hosting incoming international students. The Go Global Associate Advisor is responsible for managing existing learning opportunities with UBC academic programs and partner universities, developing curriculum, facilitating workshops, and advising students on international study, research, clinical, or practicum placements. This role specifically supports both incoming and outgoing students and involves representing Go Global on university project teams and committees. The Associate Advisor requires strong project management and educator skills, with exceptional communication abilities to navigate a complex network of partners and UBC faculties. The role coordinates and implements Go Global programs and advising services to support student mobility, including managing orientations, developing recruitment strategies, and advising students before, during, and after their international experiences. Collaboration with UBC and partner university faculty and staff using various information systems is essential.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Minimum of one to two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates individual and group advising programs, workshops, and information sessions for visiting international exchange/research students and UBC students applying for outbound exchange programs.
  • Assesses students' learning goals to advise them on international learning experiences aligned with their personal, academic, and career goals.
  • Advises students on application processes, requirements, and admission to partner universities, teaching them to manage complex information and use institutional tools.
  • Investigates and resolves discrepancies or technical difficulties with UBC systems and coaches students on resolving issues with partner institution systems.
  • Advises students prior to, during, and post their international experience, forwarding complex inquiries to appropriate advisors.
  • Advises students on housing, courses, and admissions, and assesses/admits students to various programs.
  • Assists students with course selection research at partner universities, referencing approved courses and information from faculties.
  • Assists with the application process, including forms, acceptance letters, and transcripts.
  • Provides in-depth and timely information regarding Go Global opportunities.
  • Develops and delivers educational programming for UBC students' pre-departure, in-experience, and post-experience phases.
  • Supports special programming (e.g., U21, summer programs, research programs) by developing and implementing marketing and communications strategies, and facilitating pre-departure sessions.
  • Coaches students on articulating their international experiences to employers.
  • Interprets and applies University and Go Global policy, proposing exceptions as needed.
  • Identifies issues with current policy or program guidelines and implements changes.
  • Liaises with the team, Assistant Director, and other professionals to resolve complex program-planning issues.
  • Connects students with resources and supports, including the University's Early Alert system, partner universities, faculties, and the Student Safety Abroad Manager.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates programs to address current student concerns, including workshops, online resources, and cross-campus initiatives.
  • Works with other units to develop pathways and programs supporting student transition to other development initiatives.
  • Reviews and re-designs processes using input from colleagues, students, and other units to improve service and system use.
  • Develops and delivers programs for visiting students from other universities at UBC as part of exchange, research, and other learning programs, ensuring alignment with established goals.
  • Manages and coordinates events to promote and recruit students for international learning experiences.
  • Participates in the ongoing development of University and Go Global student information systems and services.
  • Participates in the development of new summer programming (outbound and inbound) and other strategic initiatives and programs.
  • Develops and implements marketing and communication strategies for Go Global programs, including creating marketing materials and assessing strategies.
  • Writes and develops content for web information and resources, and revises online program information.
  • Creates and maintains partnerships with UBC departments, units, and faculties to support students and improve advising processes.
  • Conducts research and prepares briefs, data, and reports on best practices in international education, student learning and development, and career development related to international experiential learning.
  • Participates in the recruitment, hiring, and training of other professional advisors, BCGEU staff, and student staff.
  • Participates in the development of operating policy to improve efficiency within Go Global and support Faculty mobility initiatives.
  • May oversee student staff, including recruitment, discipline, evaluation, and termination.
  • May represent Go Global on university project teams and committees.
  • Performs other duties as required.
