The State Historical Society, a Division within the Department of Education, is dedicated to empowering audiences to experience South Dakota's stories by professionally collecting, preserving, interpreting, and publishing its history. This position serves as the Assistant to the State Historian & Director, providing support in daily duties and leading the Historical Society. The role requires strong communication skills, the ability to engage with the public, and represent the Society effectively. Key responsibilities include assisting in the organization, design, and editing of newsletters, supporting the State Historian with research and presentations, and acting as an assistant to the Society's Board of Trustees and the America 250 SD Commission. This involves preparing board materials, assisting during meetings, and ensuring preparedness for public engagements. The position will also manage the Historical Society's fiscal transactions, including invoice processing, purchasing, and other financial duties. The Society is currently in an exciting phase with recent building renovations, the re-opening of the Archives, and the partial re-opening of the state museum, with further museum completion expected in 2027.
