About The Position

The Ypsilanti Neighborhood Center Child Development Center is hiring part-time morning and/or afternoon School Age Assistant Teachers. The Assistant Teacher – School Age assists the Lead Teacher in guiding children (K-5) through an age-appropriate curriculum that develops self-help skills and instills Y values (caring, honesty, respect, responsibility). They will also assist in the daily upkeep of classrooms and maintain a thorough understanding of the child care programming.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • At least one year’s experience of working with children and families
  • Must be able to learn and use YMCA specific software within 30 days of hire.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, flexibility and an ability to work in a team setting are required.
  • Must have physical examination, including satisfactory TB test six (6) months prior to beginning work or 30 days after required.
  • Must have clean record of child abuse and neglect, as required by the Department of Human Services of Michigan
  • A patient, high energy and goal-oriented attitude is essential.
  • Ability to be responsive to the needs, wants and interests of both the parents and youth enrolled in the YMCA Offsite Child Care programming.

Nice To Haves

  • CPR and First Aid Certification strongly preferred
  • Multi-lingual ability is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Helps establish and maintain daily classroom routines, as assigned by the Lead Teacher. Daily classroom routines include food preparation and clean up, following classroom schedules, and supporting the curriculum that the Ann Arbor YMCA provides.
  • Assists the Lead Teacher in planning and organizing activities and lessons, which would include centers, small and large group activities, and large motor movement activities.
  • Assists the Lead Teacher with establishing and implementing transitions and providing a balance of structure and choices for children.
  • Provide appropriate supervision of the children in the program at all times to ensure their safety.
  • Communicate, maintain and model independent behaviors and offers guidance to promote physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development children.
  • Encourage and model healthy eating habits and physical play for children.
  • Interacts and engages with children in a variety of activities, which includes arts and crafts, organized games, reading, homework help, and after school clubs.
  • Model positive adult-to-child and adult-to-adult interactions and foster an atmosphere of respect for children and adults.
  • Possess working knowledge of child abuse and neglect laws and proper reporting procedures.
