About The Position

A full-time, non-merit, Assistant State's Attorney I vacancy exists in the State's Attorney's Office for Baltimore County, Criminal Prosecution Division. Non-Merit positions are not classified within the Baltimore County Government Classification and Compensation Plan. A list of eligible applicants will be established based on the examination as outlined below. Current and future vacancies occurring in any Office or Department of Baltimore County General Government may be filled from the list of eligible applicants. All interested transfer and promotional candidates must apply at this time. List all promotions and changes in job duties due to reclassification as separate work experiences on your application. Applicants must include the dates of the promotions and reclassifications. Note: Failure to complete all fields of the "Work Experience" section of the application will result in your application not being considered. Requirements

  • Graduation from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Maryland, or eligible to waive into the bar of the State of Maryland.
  • Knowledge of the Maryland Rules of Evidence, as well as the Local Rules for the District of Maryland and Rules applicable to other courts and tribunals as may be applicable, and the Rules of Professional Responsibility.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local law.
  • Knowledge of County's best practices and procedures.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple complex matters.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, collaborative working relationships with others (inside and outside the Office of Law).
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines while handling multiple tasks.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism under pressure.
  • A strong sense of ownership of tasks and responsibilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills required to work with the public and various agencies.
  • Strong writing and drafting skills.
  • Strong technology skills, including the ability to coordinate and conduct electronic discovery, as well as proficiency with Microsoft Office software and legal research platforms such as Westlaw.
  • A willingness to perform with minimal administrative support.
  • Applicants are required to submit proof of licenses, certifications and education beyond high school to meet the required qualifications of the position.
  • Diplomas or transcripts must show the applicant’s major field of study.

  • At the time of the interview, the applicant will be required to submit a Certificate of Good Standing from the Maryland Court of Appeals.
  • All applicants must be of good moral character and emotionally stable, as determined by a comprehensive background investigation and drug test.
  • All applicants must be citizens of the United States at the time of appointment.
  • Applicants selected for an appointment to a position in Baltimore County must successfully complete an employment background investigation, including, but not limited to a criminal background, education, and fingerprint check.

Responsibilities

  • Handles all must appear traffic cases including DUI's, Hit & Runs, Fleeing and Eluding, Driving While Suspended, Driving Uninsured, etc.
  • Handles all of the criminal misdemeanor cases including domestic assaults, thefts, auto thefts, identity thefts and hundreds of miscellaneous other misdemeanors.
  • Prepares files for assigned dockets.
  • Communicates with Defense Attorneys.
  • Physically goes to court and handles all of the cases on the docket.
  • Performs other duties as required.
