About The Position

The Hoyer Lab at Van Andel Institute (VAI) is seeking a Research Technician to join their research team. The lab focuses on the cell biology of neurons and other brain cell types, investigating how specialized pathways remove damaged or superfluous organelles. They engineer stem cells into neurons and glial cells, and use CRISPR/Cas9 to create disease-related genetic variants. The lab utilizes techniques such as fluorescence microscopy, cryo-electron microscopy, flow cytometry, and mass spectrometry-based proteomics to understand mechanisms that promote health and prevent neurodegenerative diseases. This role will involve training in maintaining stem cell cultures, performing molecular and cell biology techniques, preparing protein samples, CRISPR/Cas9 editing, assisting with laboratory maintenance, and detailed record keeping.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Cell/Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related biomedical fields
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and patience
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as an active member of an integrated team
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Written and oral communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • At least one (1) year of wet lab bench experience is preferred, but not required

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining and handling stem cell cultures
  • Molecular and cell biology techniques (i.e. plasmid cloning, Western blots, flow cytometry)
  • Preparing protein samples for mass spectrometry
  • CRISPR/Cas9 editing
  • Assisting with general laboratory maintenance
  • Detailed record keeping and adherence to protocols

Benefits

  • Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO)
  • Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA) Employer
