About The Position

The Department of Historical Studies at the University of Toronto Mississauga is seeking to hire a full-time tenure stream Assistant Professor specializing in Transnational and/or South Asian Feminisms, with complementary expertise in Diaspora Studies. The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2027. The successful applicant will teach within the Department’s Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) Program at UTM and will also hold a graduate appointment at the Women and Gender Studies Institute on the St. George campus. This search is being conducted concurrently with a search for an Associate Professor in the same specialization, but only one appointment will be made. Requirements

  • Earned a PhD degree in Women and Gender Studies or a related area in the humanities or social sciences by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter.
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching in one or more of the following: feminist analyses of empire, colonial/postcolonial histories, and transnational formations of gender and sexuality.
  • Successful candidates use interdisciplinary, non-Western-centric methods including digital and archival approaches to diasporic feminist knowledge production, with particular attention to race, caste, and ethnicity.
  • Research and teaching interests that complement and enhance existing departmental strengths.
  • Evidence of research excellence demonstrated through a record of publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals or forthcoming publications that meet high international standards; the submitted research statement; presentations at significant conferences; awards and accolades; and strong endorsements from referees.
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (including teaching statement, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations or evidence of superior performance in other teaching-related activities), and strong letters of reference.
  • Ability to foster diversity on campus and within the curriculum or discipline.
  • Evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial environment.
  • Submission of a statement describing contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Responsibilities

  • Pursue innovative and independent research.

  • Teach in the undergraduate Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) program on the Mississauga campus (UTM), offering a broad range of courses from introductory to advanced undergraduate levels.
  • Support undergraduate research and experiential learning initiatives, such as the WGSS Research Opportunity Program, the Department of Historical Studies Research Hub, and the Feminist Research Hub.
  • Engage in interdisciplinary collaboration, curriculum development, and program initiatives, including the WGSS Program's Feminist Lunch Series and other community-engaged scholarly activities.
  • Hold a graduate appointment at the Women and Gender Studies Institute on the St. George campus.
  • Participate in the Graduate Collaborative Program in Women and Gender Studies, with opportunities for graduate-level teaching, supervision, and mentorship.
