About The Position

McDaniel College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Philosophy beginning in Fall 2027. Qualified applicants will have an AOS in Applied Ethics. The candidate must be prepared to teach courses in at least one of the following areas: Medical Ethics OR Business Ethics OR AI Ethics. Additionally, the ability to teach courses in Philosophy of Law or other areas of Applied Ethics, such as Environmental Ethics, is welcomed. The ideal candidate will combine excellence in teaching with scholarly promise. This position offers candidates the opportunity to design innovative courses and adopt an interdisciplinary approach to their teaching. The successful candidate will excel at engaging students in the classroom, recruiting students to the major and minor, and increasing the visibility of the philosophy program across campus.

Requirements

Ph.D. in Philosophy. Candidates who are ABD will be considered.
Experience teaching at the college or university level preferred
The ability and willingness to work in a collegial manner with students, faculty, and staff
Minimum of 3 office hours on campus per week as outlined in the faculty handbook
Some weekend and evening hours are required for recruitment activities and other faculty responsibilities as communicated by the provost or dean of faculty
Candidates must comply with all related federal, state, and local regulatory guidelines including, but not limited to, FERPA and Title IX.

Nice To Haves

Ability to teach courses in Philosophy of Law or other areas of Applied Ethics, such as Environmental Ethics.

Responsibilities

Teach six courses per academic year (3-3 load) that align with departmental needs including but not limited to: courses in one of the areas listed above, a first-year seminar, and additional electives that align with the candidate's expertise.
Maintain an active research agenda
Mentor and advise undergraduate students
Submit timely mid-term grade reports, final grades, departmental reports, and other requirements as communicated by the dean of faculty
Develop syllabi according to best practices in higher education
Contribute to the life of the department and college through committee service and program development.
Participate in at least two major recruitment events each year to welcome prospective and admitted students.
Follow all policies and procedures in the Faculty Handbook.
