Assistant Professor of Philosophy - Asian Philosophy (27/28)

Cal Poly•San Luis Obispo, CA
•$90,276 - $98,244•Onsite

About The Position

The Philosophy Department in the College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California, is seeking applications for a full-time, academic-year, tenure-track Assistant Professor to begin approximately August 12, 2027. The Area of Specialization (AOS) is Asian Philosophy. Teaching needs include GE courses teaching classical philosophical texts, Buddhism (as a Religious Studies course), Buddhist Philosophy, and Chinese and East Asian Philosophy. The ideal candidate will possess a combination of university-level teaching experience and research potential. Applicants with an earned or nearly complete doctorate in philosophy, with demonstrable qualifications in Asian Philosophy, are sought. Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) will be considered but must provide proof that the doctorate will be awarded prior to the start of the appointment. Graduate training in Religious Studies is preferred but not required. The anticipated hiring range is $90,276 - $98,244/year. Although Cal Poly is primarily a teaching university, faculty are expected to balance teaching with an active program of research/professional development (including publication), student supervision and advising, and participation in service activities at the department and college/university level. The typical teaching load is 12 units per semester, with a reduction in course load in each of the first two years to help new faculty establish an active program of research and professional development. Cal Poly anticipates a possible transition to semester-based year-round operations (YRO), where faculty may be assigned to teach in two consecutive semesters out of three offered annually, with the possibility of teaching in a third semester for additional compensation.
