About The Position

Union College invites applications for a full time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Philosophy, beginning September 1, 2027. The area of specialization is ethics and the area(s) of competence is open. The ideal applicant will have a Ph.D. in philosophy by the start of the appointment. The successful applicant will be expected to teach in their area of expertise, offer courses in philosophy at the introductory and advanced levels, and contribute courses for Union's First-Year Inquiry and General Education programs. The teaching load is 2 courses per term with a one course reduction in the first year. Union College’s academic year consists of three 10-week trimesters. The department hosts one of the most impressive Speaker Series of any undergraduate institution in the country and is also home to Ephemeris, an undergraduate philosophy journal, founded in 2001. The department also has a very active student-run philosophy club. The faculty have research interests in metaphysics, epistemology, ancient Greek philosophy, early modern philosophy, Latin American philosophy, feminist philosophy, aesthetics, social and political philosophy, Africana philosophy, and philosophy of mind. Union College also has a vibrant set of interdisciplinary programs, such as Law and Humanities, Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies, and Environmental Policy, to name a few. The successful hire can develop courses in their area of expertise that may contribute to one or more of these interdisciplinary programs.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in philosophy by the start of the appointment.
  • Ability to teach in their area of expertise.
  • Ability to offer courses in philosophy at the introductory and advanced levels.
  • Ability to contribute courses for Union's First-Year Inquiry and General Education programs.
  • Ability to develop courses that may contribute to interdisciplinary programs.
