About The Position

Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) is seeking qualified candidates for an Assistant Professor of Economics and Agribusiness Management position. The ideal candidate will possess the skills to engage students in economics and agribusiness management, demonstrate teaching excellence, strong communication skills, a commitment to professional development, and a passion for student learning and advancement. Key responsibilities include teaching a range of courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, money and banking, farm management, agricultural finance, cooperative management, and related agricultural and economics subjects. The role also involves academic advising for students in Agribusiness Management and Agricultural Economics, the concurrent enrollment program, and the Liberal Education Program. Faculty members are expected to uphold SMSU's Equity 2030 Goals and excel in teaching effectiveness, scholarly and creative activity, continuing preparation and study, contributions to student growth and development, and service to the university and community. The position also requires participation in the ACHM Department's educational, recruitment, and retention activities, as well as engaging in regional and community service aligned with SMSU's mission.

Requirements

  • A Master’s Degree in Agricultural Economics, or Economics with a specialization in Agriculture or related field.
  • One year of college-level teaching experience
  • Demonstrated evidence of teaching excellence
  • Written and oral communication skills
  • Exhibit an interest in student learning, growth and advancement
  • Display a student-centered approach to education for the success and growth of SMSU’s Agribusiness Management and Economics Programs
  • Understanding of and appreciation for liberal education.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment and have a demonstrated ability to teach and work with persons from diverse backgrounds.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States by the first day of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD in Agricultural Economics, or Economics with a specialization in Agriculture

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, money and banking, farm management, agricultural finance, cooperative management, and related agricultural and economics classes.
  • Engage in academic advising for majors and minors in Agribusiness Management and Agricultural Economics, students in SMSU’s concurrent enrollment (College Now) program, and students taking economics courses as part of SMSU’s Liberal Education Program (LEP).
  • Meet the expectations of a full-time Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) faculty member, including the Equity 2030 Goals and strong performance within the five criteria for professional development and evaluation: 1) teaching effectiveness, 2) scholarly and creative activity, 3) continuing preparation and study, 4) contributions to student growth and development, and 5) service to the university and community.
  • Participate in the educational, recruitment and retention activities of SMSU's Agriculture, Culinology and Hospitality Management (ACHM) Department.
  • Engage in regional and community service activities as part of SMSU’s special commitment to the educational needs of Southwest Minnesota.
