About The Position

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) is seeking an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering (Structural Engineering) to begin Fall 2027. This tenure-track, nine-month position is part of a strategic faculty expansion in the School of Engineering. TAMIU is a Hispanic-Serving Institution located in Laredo, Texas, with a focus on student success and research excellence. The University offers ABET-accredited programs and is launching a BS in Civil Engineering in Fall 2027, supported by strong regional demand. This hire, along with a geotechnical hire and an environmental engineering colleague, will lead the Civil Engineering program's launch.

Requirements

  • Hold a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline by the appointment start date (applicants nearing completion may be considered if the degree is awarded before appointment).
  • Demonstrate expertise in structural engineering through research, scholarship, professional experience, or a combination thereof.
  • Ability to teach Structural Analysis, Reinforced Concrete & Steel, and related structural engineering coursework.
  • Ability to develop associated laboratory activities.
  • Ability to mentor student research.
  • Ability to establish an independent research program.
  • Show strength in one or more of the following areas: experimental tests of steel or reinforced concrete components and connections; performance under extreme loads; testing innovative or sustainable structural materials; structural health monitoring and field instrumentation; or repair and strengthening of existing structures.

  • PE licensure or progress toward it (e.g., FE/EIT) is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Establishing an independent, externally funded research program in structural engineering.
  • Contributing to the development of the School’s structural engineering laboratory.
  • Teaching Structural Analysis, Reinforced Concrete & Steel, and related structural engineering coursework.
  • Mentoring student research and senior design projects.
  • Teaching other Civil Engineering and engineering courses as needed.
  • Supporting recruitment, preparation for future ABET accreditation, and service.
  • Collaborating with academia, industry, and government.
  • Pursuing Professional Engineer (PE) licensure when eligible.
