About The Position

The Residence Life Team within University Housing Services (UHS) is responsible for the development and delivery of services and programs that foster a positive residential experience, ensuring the quality of life, well-being, and personal development of residential students, thereby contributing to retention and academic success. This unit establishes policy and procedure in residential facilities, engages in individual contact with residents, advises and facilitates student government, administers conduct processes, intervenes in crises, develops educational and programmatic efforts, and coordinates the safety and security of residents. This is a part-time (20 hours), long-term temporary position (up to 3 years) classified as a Student Services Professional IB. The anticipated hiring range is $2,075 per month, based on a full-time monthly rate of $4,150. The work schedule is typically Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 12:00 pm, with flexibility for operational needs, including some evenings, weekends, and holidays. This is a live-on campus position, and occasional on-call shifts may be scheduled year-round, including during campus closures, on a rotational basis among live-on Area Coordinator staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Additional specialized experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Valid and in-State CA Driver's license with insurance.
  • One year of experience in professional Student Services work at the entry trainee level, or equivalent graduate-level job-related education.
  • Working knowledge of organization and program management methods and problems.
  • Working knowledge of research and interviewing techniques.
  • Working knowledge of principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of the specific campus organization, procedures, and activities.
  • Ability to rapidly acquire working knowledge of the specific objectives of the campus Student Services program and its relationship to the total campus operation.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
  • Ability to gather and analyze data.
  • Ability to reason logically, draw valid conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Ability to present clear and concise information orally and in written reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, and other private and public agencies.

Nice To Haves

  • Enrollment in a Higher Education/Student Affairs Master's program (or related field).
  • Experience working with students from varied socioeconomic, educational, or cultural backgrounds in a residential, student services, or community-based setting.

Responsibilities

  • Support Front Desk Attendants (FDA), Resident Advisors (RA), and Program Assistants (PAs) in daily operations and emergency interventions within residential communities.
  • Assist Coordinators with student success support services and programs aimed at improving retention and graduation rates for all residential students.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with residents.
  • Utilize skills to encourage student success through programs, role modeling with students and staff.
  • Support administrative operations of the department, including room assignments, occupancy reports, resident check-in/check-out, room changes, work requests, and equipment check-out.
  • Climb stairs (as some residence halls lack elevators) for emergency and crisis response.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of and enforce University policy, UHS policy, and the UHS Housing License Agreement for residential students.
  • Assist Resident Advisors and Program Assistants with program development, planning, and implementation.
  • Assist with the annual selection processes for Resident Advisors and Program Assistants.
  • Assist with educational campaigns, programming, trainings, and workshops for the residential community.
  • Network and collaborate with campus departments to develop, design, and implement programs that facilitate interaction and dialogue on student engagement, leadership, sense of belonging, and inclusive community practices.
  • Understand the expectations of professional staff, student leaders, front desk attendants, elected members of individual hall councils, Resident Student Association (RSA), National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH), and residential students.
