About The Position

The Greater Vallejo Recreation District (GVRD) is seeking an Assistant Coordinator for its Youth Services department. This part-time position (20-25 hours per week) involves supporting the planning, coordination, and supervision of various youth programs, including Before and After School programs, seasonal camps, and special events. The role reports to the Recreation Coordinator and Supervisor and includes responsibilities such as staff supervision, program development, administrative support, and community engagement. The position requires availability Monday-Friday and occasional weekends to support community events, outreach, and program needs.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience in planning, developing, and supervising recreational programs and facilities.
  • Two years of college with studies in the field of recreation or a closely related field.
  • Possession of valid California driver’s license and maintenance of an acceptable driving record while employed.
  • First Aid and CPR Certification, or ability to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Ability to exercise sound independent judgment within general policy guidelines.
  • Ability to motivate and provide encouragement for participation in recreation programs and team environments.
  • Ability to write reports and keep accurate records.
  • Understand and follow verbal and written directions.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a variety of personnel and establish effective working relationships.
  • Effectively manage designated operations and supervise assigned personnel; work safely and enforce safety procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher) and basic graphic design tools.
  • Knowledge of Civic Rec or similar registration software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lead groups and work collaboratively with diverse teams.
  • Ability to assess program needs and implement improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in hiring, training, coaching, and supervising part-time youth services staff.
  • Support daily operations of youth programs including camps, school-year programs, and community events.
  • Serve as a substitute at program sites as needed.
  • Develop and lead staff trainings and workshops.
  • Perform administrative duties including billing, invoicing, scheduling, and data entry.
  • Use Civic Rec software to manage participant registrations, track attendance, and process payments.
  • Respond to public inquiries, assist families, and support customer service needs.
  • Assist with creating program curriculum, scheduling activities, and planning events.
  • Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, ensuring safety and quality standards are met.
  • Order and maintain inventory of program supplies.
  • Collaborate with Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) and community partners.
  • Attend and assist at community events to promote programs and services.
  • Create flyers and promotional materials to increase awareness and participation.
  • May assist in developing staff training materials and conducting staff workshops and education programs.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
