About The Position

Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics, a Division I and Big Ten Conference member, is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill the position of Assistant or Associate Director of Strategic Communications. The successful candidate will serve as the strategic communications and social media contact for the 14-time national champion and five-time defending national champion Penn State wrestling team. This position will also oversee student contacts with the men’s and women’s tennis teams. Assignments are subject to change.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations or a related field plus work-related experience in communications or public relations is required.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills are also required.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and compliance is required.
  • Position requires considerable initiative, creativity and independence.
  • Minimally requires a bachelors degree plus three (3) year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • If filled as Marketing and Communications Specialist - Senior Professional, this position requires: 6+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted
  • If filled as Marketing and Communications Specialist - Advanced Professional, this position requires: 3+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted
  • PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.
  • A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere, Spark, etc.)
  • Proficiency in website content management systems
  • Proficiency in social media platforms
  • Proficiency in Statcrew/NCAA Live Stats
  • Experience in photography
  • Experience recording and editing video

Responsibilities

  • Leading the overall communications, PR, media relations and creative content strategy for the assigned teams
  • Enhancing and collaborating on student-athlete branding strategies and execution
  • Generating feature content, photo, video and other unique coverage for team social and website channels
  • Producing online team record books, news releases and feature stories
  • Coordinating media requests in a strategic manner
  • Facilitating social media in line with department goals
  • Staffing home and select away events
  • Supervising student assistants as well as statistical crews and other event support personnel
  • Other duties as assigned
