About The Position

As an Asset Protection Detective at Macy’s, you will help protect company assets, reduce shortage, and support a safe, customer-focused shopping environment. You will use surveillance, investigative tools, and partnerships with store teams and law enforcement to identify and respond to theft, recover merchandise, and help protect customers, colleagues, and the business.

The role helps reduce loss while maintaining a safe and welcoming store environment through training, observation, investigation, and de-escalation. Responsibilities include preparing documentation and evidence, supporting investigations and audits, and helping colleagues understand asset protection protocols. The position involves prolonged periods of standing and walking, time in surveillance areas, and the ability to apprehend shoplifters.

This is a full-time position. Full-time colleagues are typically scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week. All schedules include weekend shifts, and hours depend on business needs and colleague availability.

Requirements

• Ability to observe, identify, and respond to suspicious activity in a retail environment.
• Strong communication skills and ability to partner effectively with customers, colleagues, leaders, and law enforcement.
• Ability to use sound judgment, de-escalation tools, and company procedures to support a safe environment.
• Ability to handle proprietary, sensitive, and confidential information with discretion and integrity.
• For jobs in New York, a current New York State Security Guard License is required.
• Ability to apprehend shoplifters.
• Ability to sustain long periods of time enclosed in surveillance areas.
• Ability to frequently lift or move up to 30 pounds.
• Ability to perform prolonged periods of standing and walking around the store or department.

Responsibilities

• Use surveillance techniques, investigative tools, and reporting systems to identify theft, dishonest activity, and shortage trends.
• Partner with Asset Protection leaders, store teams, and law enforcement to support investigations and protect company assets.
• Apply de-escalation tools and sound judgment to help maintain a safe environment for customers and colleagues.
• Prepare clear and timely documentation, statements, reports, and evidence related to theft incidents, investigations, audits, and assigned activities.
• Support apprehension of shoplifters and dishonest employees in accordance with company policies and legal requirements.
• Recover stolen merchandise and support investigations through statements, evidence, and documentation.
• Maintain compliance with company policies and legal standards related to apprehensions, searches, and evidence preservation.
• Testify in court for criminal and civil cases, as needed.
• Respond to alarm calls, support special assignments, and facilitate first aid for customers and colleagues when needed.
• Train colleagues on protocols that help protect company assets.
• Foster acceptance and respect in relationships with colleagues, customers, and communities.
