About The Position

Mawave is hiring a (Senior) AI Application Engineer to build and operate AI-supported internal products, tools, and workflows end to end. The role identifies high-impact opportunities in operational teams’ day-to-day work, turns them into pragmatic solutions, and takes ownership from discovery and MVP through launch and iteration. The focus is AI application engineering, code-based tool architecture, and frontend development—not backend foundation implementation as an end in itself. Backend services may be built or owned by full-stack developers, while this role focuses on the frontend and tool orchestration. The engineer designs and implements LLM-based workflows, including tool-calling and agents, with error handling, fallbacks, and cost and latency optimization. The role also covers system integrations, quality and operations, user enablement, feedback loops, and RAG or knowledge setups where useful. AI-assisted coding is welcomed, while the engineer remains responsible for a clean, scalable codebase through deliberate architecture, clear interfaces, refactoring, and high quality standards. The position works closely with Business Operations, product stakeholders, and end users to align expectations, prioritize by impact, and support adoption.

Requirements

  • Experience developing and operating software or automation solutions with substantial ownership, ideally AI- or LLM-related products or tools.
  • Experience with code-based frontend development and architecture.
  • Strong understanding of AI application engineering, including prompting, tool-calling or agents, RAG fundamentals, evaluation, and guardrails for hallucinations, prompt injection, and data leakage.
  • Good understanding of API design and integrations, including authentication, permissions, rate limits, secrets, and error handling.
  • Experience with observability and operations, including logging, metrics, and alerts, as well as release and quality management.
  • A clean AI-assisted coding mindset, with clear architecture, modularity, interfaces, naming and standards, and regular refactoring; avoid patchwork codebases.
  • Strong product and business orientation, with a focus on user value, adoption, time-to-value, and impact-based prioritization.
  • Independent and structured working style, able to manage parallel requests with one-person ownership.
  • Very good written and spoken German (at least C1) and English.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing and operating AI- or LLM-related products or tools.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end development of AI tools and features, including code-based frontend implementation and tool architecture, from problem discovery through build, launch, and iteration.
  • Design and implement LLM-based workflows, including tool-calling and agents, with error handling, fallbacks, and cost and latency optimization.
  • Maintain quality and reliable operations through testing strategy, bug triage, monitoring and observability, releases, incident handling, and sustainable maintenance.
  • Integrate internal and external systems through APIs, addressing authentication, permissions, rate limits, secrets, and error handling; pragmatically enable users.
  • Build feedback loops with stakeholders and end users by structuring requirements, forming hypotheses, defining success criteria, and prioritizing work.
  • Set up RAG and knowledge systems when appropriate, including data and document preparation, retrieval quality, and evaluation.
  • Document decisions and systems, including decision logs, ADRs, and concise how-to guides, to preserve knowledge and reduce key-person risk.
  • Work closely with Business Operations and product stakeholders to align, manage expectations, and ensure adoption.
  • Guide codebase architecture, structure, quality, interfaces, and refactoring, including when AI tools accelerate initial code creation.

Benefits

  • Flexible working hours and the option to work from home.
  • 30 days of annual leave.
  • Workation of up to three months or a sabbatical of up to two months.
  • Choice of a taxable benefit allowance or EGYM Wellpass, with access to more than 8,000 sports and wellness offerings.
  • Tax-free meal allowance of €7.50 per day, in addition to drinks and snacks.
  • Monthly mobility subsidy of €32 for public transport.
  • Several team and after-work events during the year.
  • Modern, bright Munich office with city views and good public transport access.
  • A MacBook for work.
